Year Three

 Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

We’re already in Week 5 of Term 3—time is flying! A friendly reminder that when the 8:50am music plays, students should be lined up and ready to walk upstairs with their classroom teacher. Once in the classroom, they will put their bags away and prepare to start learning by 9:00am.

If your child arrives after 9:00am, they need to enter the school via the office. This is an important part of our Child Safety Standards, ensuring all students are safely accounted for and accurately marked on the roll.

Congratulations to the following learners !

Religious Education

This week, we have been learning about the Assumption of Mary. This is the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up to heaven body and soul at the end of her life. We talked about how this shows the special role Mary had in God’s plan and how she is honoured by the Church.

The students learned that the Assumption is a time to remember Mary’s faith, love, and closeness to God. We also discussed ways we can be inspired by Mary’s example—by showing kindness, helping others, and trusting in God, just as she did.

Maths

Students are learning to use mental strategies to solve money problems. They practise combining and separating amounts, estimating and checking answers, and explaining their thinking using tools like number lines, bar models, or equations. They have especially enjoyed working out change and showing their working on number lines.

English

Students have been developing their reading and comprehension skills by using knowledge of text structures and language, and by checking their understanding as they read. They have been asking and answering questions to clarify meaning, learning and applying new vocabulary, and using Colourful Semantics to help identify and organise the main parts of a sentence. They are also practising how to write clear summary sentences that capture the main idea of a text.

AUSLAN

This week, students completed their Auslan assessment for Unit 5. They demonstrated their skills by signing key vocabulary and sentences, translating between English and Auslan, and showing their understanding of different ways actions can be signed. This assessment helped students reflect on what they have learned so far and celebrate their progress in Auslan.

Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) & Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships and Building Respectful Relationships (RRRR)

This week, students learned about the difference between rights—the things we are all entitled to—and responsibilities—the things we are expected to do to help ourselves and others. We discussed how everyone has the right to feel safe, be treated fairly, and have their needs met, both at home and at school. Students shared examples of how they can respect the rights of others in different places, including their homes, our classroom, the school grounds, and in the wider community. They also explored how acting responsibly helps build a respectful, kind, and fair environment for everyone

Integrated Learning

This week, we learned how to recognise and describe different emotions in ourselves and others. We explored basic emotions like happy, sad, and angry, and discussed what might cause us to feel them. Students thought about how emotions can feel in our bodies—such as butterflies in the tummy when nervous or a hot face when angry. We also practised strategies to manage our emotions in a respectful and safe way, like taking deep breaths, talking to a trusted person, or walking away to calm down.
