Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

What a great week we have had in Year 2. The students have been thoroughly enjoying their swimming lessons, building confidence and improving their skills in the water. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and teamwork at the pool.

Even with a short week, we have made the most of our learning time. In Maths, students have been introduced to the Number Fluency Program which is a new addition to our mathematics lessons. The Number Fluency Program is designed to help students develop number fluency, which is the ability to flexibly apply strategies to accurately and efficiently solve number-based problems. It has been wonderful to see students embrace this new addition to our mathematics lessons this week.

As part of our Integrated Studies learning on healthy eating, we will be creating a special recipe book within the Year 2 community and we would love your contribution! We warmly welcome recipes from all cuisines, including those that reflect your country or cultural traditions. This is a wonderful opportunity to share a favourite family dish and celebrate the diversity in our Year 2 community. Recipes can be printed and sent to school with your child or emailed directly to your child’s teacher. We look forward to seeing the delicious and unique recipes our families have to share!

This week we have been learning about...

Religious Education:   Students continued learning about the first sacrament of initiation - Baptism.  Students have been learning about Baptism in Jesus' day, Baptism in today's world, and the Baptism process.

Mathematics:  Students have continued learning about multiplication and division.  Our focus has been on identifying the number of groups in a sharing problem, representing sharing using an array, using arrays to solve sharing problems, and solving division problems using partitioning.

English:  Students have enjoyed reading and unpacking different language features in the picture book 'Salat in Secret'. Students have been writing sentences that describe how Muhammad’s feelings and actions change throughout the story, as well as writing their opinion about why Salat in Secret is a special book. Students were also given the opportunity to examine a prayer rug to deepen their understanding of the cultural and religious practices described in Salat in Secret.  We have also been learning to identify nouns and adjectives in sentences, and to select adjectives to modify nouns in a sentence. For our decoding and spelling focus, we have continued learning about Open Syllables.

AUSLAN:  Students reflected on and consolidated their learning of Auslan signs from this term. Students participated in learning activities that allowed them to practise using the signs learnt over the past three weeks.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR:  Students continued their learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes, recognising that applying labels to individuals is unhelpful. Students engaged in discussions on how they might respond in situations where such labels are used.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will begin exploring the concept of the Trinity and its significance.

Mathematics: Teaching will focus on the concept of Operations. This will involve applying the four key operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—across a variety of problem-solving contexts. We will be placing particular emphasis on developing flexible strategies, including the use of bar models to visualise problems and the CUBES strategy to carefully unpack and plan solutions. These approaches will help students strengthen both their accuracy and confidence when working with number problems.

English: As part of Book Week, students will unpack different language features using the picture book 'The Truck Cat'. Students will learn to expand simple sentences with an adjective to modify the noun/s in the sentence.

Auslan:  Students will learn that signs that show an action by holding, touching or using an object are called handling signs. We use handling signs when we hold or touch an object to close or play it.

The signs we will learn include:

Integrated Studies:  Students will start learning on the topic of healthy eating and look at a healthy eating plate.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR:  Students will continue their learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes. Students will learn to describe what it means to be gender fair and will participate in role-play activities showing what it looks like to be gender fair.
