Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

Students in our weekly assembly
Students in our weekly assembly

Thank you to the parents who have reached out with an offer to volunteer at our excursion. We now have the numbers we require for the day! Next week on Thursday (21st) , we are going to practise folding our own laundry. We would love a few labelled items to be put in your child's bag for us to practise with.

Religious Education Focus:

This week in Religion, the children learnt about the Assumption of Mary in celebration of her feast day on the 15th of August. They discovered how Mary was assumed into heaven by God and honoured for her faith and devotion. The children also learnt that Mary always said “yes” to God, trusting in His plan for her life.

English focus:

We are reading "I will Not ever Never eat a Tomato" by Lauren Child. It discusses a child's dislike of certain foods and how they discover to engage with varied foods. It describes food in a fantastic way such as carrots from Jupitar and mash from clouds near Mt Fuji.

Phonics: During phonics this week we learnt how to spell words with the quick 'oo' sound.

Mathematics focus: This week we learnt about division through a game called Game of Three. It is exploring the ideas of making three and what to do with the leftovers. It would be a great game to play at home together.

SEL: This week we learned about what 'Fair Play' looks like when playing with others. We explored this by getting in to groups and playing different games and looked at how we can solve challenges that arise.

Integrated Curriculum: Personal, Social and Community Health

This week we have learnt about how to be a responsible consumer of food and how we can pack a lunchbox that has different food groups.

AUSLAN:

This week we revised Unit 5 and and completed a self reflection on Seesaw.

Next  week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will work on the 'The fruits of the Holy Spirit' and how we can look after God's creation.

Integrated Curriculum focus: Next week we will learn new skills that develop our independence such as fold laundry, zip up a jacket, tidy our school tubs and tie shoe laces.

English focus: Next week we are reading The Garden of Broken things and an epic book about why we need sleep.

Phonics focus: So excited to be starting stage 7.4 of Little Learners Love Literacy next

week. We will start with 'a_e' as in race, gate, mate.

This tends to be a tricky stage for most children. A preview  of our learning sequence is attached.

Mathematics focus: Next week we are investigating patterns within our number systems. Things like what happens when I skip count by 2s, 5s or 10s from any given number, or what happens when I double a number.

SEL: Next week we are learning about how to respond respectfully when someone says they can’t do something because of their gender.

AUSLAN Focus: Next week we will learn the signs:

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.

    Reminders

  • Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play for Term 3.

  • Final call for the questionnaire and baby photo please.

  • A change of clothes to be placed in each child's bag (including socks, underwear or tights) in case of an accident.

  • Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home text:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
