Dear Families,
This week has been very busy for the Grade 6 Community. We have been continuing our sports training for the upcoming interschool sports, as well as attending the Assumption Mass on Friday. Students who are receiving their Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday have been to Church throughout the week for Reconciliation, we would like to congratulate and wish those students the best for the next step of their faith journey.
Congratulations for the students who have received their awards from the last couple of weeks! Keep up the amazing work!
This week we learnt about...
Religious Education Focus:
Students attended the Assumption Mass on Friday, reflecting on prior learning regarding passages from the Book of Zechariah. It was a wonderful celebration of Mary and how she, as a Saint, was a great leader and role model and how to follow in her footsteps.
English Focus:
Reading:
We continued reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. Felix and Zelda are rescued from the Nazis by a man with a beard and taken to safety with other children. We discussed why Felix keeps his stories private and the author’s deeper messages about bravery, kindness, and the goodness people can show even in dangerous times. Students examined vivid descriptions in the text, reflected on acts of heroism, and considered the challenges of hiding to survive.
Writing:
In Writing, students continued to develop their skills in using note-taking, creating a SPO (Single Paragraph Outline) and summarising in relation to the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman. They are showing their capability by taking a writing sample from the text and are able to identify key words and phrases to assist in their writing skills.
Mathematics Focus:
In Mathematics, students continued exploring decimals, focusing on dividing decimals and whole numbers by powers of 10, 100 and 1000. They also investigated how dividing decimals and whole numbers by the powers of 10, 100, 1000 is visually represented in place value charts. We explored their learning through a range of math games and written tasks.
Integrated Studies Focus:
In Integrated Studies, students are learning to understand what puberty is and identify the physical changes that happen during puberty. These discussions involved physical, emotional and social changes that occur as the students grow and develop and how every adult in their life has been through it. Students were encouraged to ask wondering and clarifying questions, and to identify who they can speak to in regards to these conversations.
Auslan Learning Focus
In Auslan, students were being assessed on two areas of learning, signing a short story to the theme We're Going on a Bear Hunt. They were also showing their ability to sign wondering thoughts and questions during activities.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
