Tuned in Kids

Make a Noise, Let your Voice be heard!

A Big Band Program Initiative @ Chatham PS

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Overview

Tuned In Kids is excited to announce the trial of not one but THREE new bands at Chatham PS, beginning in Term 4 this year. Singing, Percussion, and Ukulele!

These bands will have up to 20 students each.

Try-Outs will be held in Week 9.

The Band Program will be run by Tuned In Kids music teacher Yanai Morris, who since 2008 has taught hundreds of Chatham PS kids to play music.

Our goals for the Big Bands:

  • Foster connection and community through music
  • Kids experience music as a good vibe fun activity, playing and singing together
  • Prepare students for performances - eg develop confidence

If these are as successful as we think they might be, the ensembles will become an ongoing part of our music program at Chatham.

Who is eligible? Students from grades 3-6.

When? Weekly during lunchtime, each one on different days, in the Performing Arts room.

One or all three? Students are welcome to try out and participate in more than one ensemble

Cost? $8 per session. We’ve kept the cost low to make the program as accessible as possible

Commitment? From Week One until Week Ten of Term 4. If a family is going away early that is not a problem.

TRY-OUTS in WEEK 9!

Try-outs are being held for each ensemble over 3 lunchtimes in Week 9, the last week of term, with a different day for each ensemble.

These will allow:

  • students to experience what being in an ensemble means
  • decide if it’s for them, and
  • help Yanai assess each student's skill capacity to play/sing, and focus.

What skills are required?

Ukulele - Most kids at Chatham PS have learnt some basic ukulele chords with Yanai, and in Performing Arts.

Drumming - being able to clap in time.

Singing - be able to sing mostly in tune’

Focus - listen to what Yanai is saying, and follow his instructions

Kids who are not quite ready will be able to try out again next year (should the program be successful!).

Here's a brief overview of each ensemble:

Singing Students will learn to sing powerfully and expressively, and to harmonise. We will sing old and new popular songs, with primary school-appropriate lyrics.

Song suggestions from students are encouraged!

Percussion Students will learn to play distinct rhythms together on a variety of percussion instruments. It sounds amazing when this comes together!

Ukulele The focus will be on strumming chords along with popular songs. More advanced parts will be available for students who wish to challenge themselves.

Yanai will visit each classroom on Monday 8th to talk about the program, take names of interested students, and hand out information for parents.
