Kitchen Garden

Term 3 has flown! Time flies when you are having fun and we have had so much fun with the Year 1/2 students this term! Two weeks ago we were in the garden and began planting tomatoes and eggplant from seed. Making pots out of newspaper, we sprinkled our tiny seeds into the pots and will now watch them grow in the weeks to come. We are also very excited that our mushrooms have begun sprouting and now look like delicious balls of white marshmallow! In the next few days, they will hopefully grow a little bit bigger and we can then harvest them in order to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the simple fungi.

On Tuesday 2nd September, the corridors were filled with the delicious aroma of freshly baked pizzas. They sure were a crowd favourite! The Year 1/2 students could choose from a variety of toppings to create their very own pizza. The topping choices were mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, capsicum, cheese, fresh oregano and thyme. The students were encouraged to try new flavour combinations and also add fresh herbs and/or garlic infused oil to lift their pizza to the next level.

From our garden we accompanied our pizzas with a mixed array of greens, which included two varieties of lettuce, parsley, rocket, small baby broccolini and spinach. These were all tossed together with lemon juice and olive oil, and topped with perfectly ripened avocados, generously supplied by Voula. The students really enjoyed this and in the words of Felix from 1/2M, ‘this was the best salad I have ever eaten!’ This was a huge compliment.

We also made lemonade, from lemons that were kindly donated to Chatham by Dimitra, our Business Manager, and Morris L's (Year 6) family. The lemonade was deliciously tangy, cold and refreshing, and also enjoyed by all.

Thank you to our volunteers, Voula, Eric, Sarah and Sophie – we loved having your assistance throughout the whole process and precise time keeping skills when it came to cooking our pizzas. All were cooked to absolute perfection… Yum!

The recipes for our two-ingredient pizza dough and lemonade are attached.

Happy cooking everyone!
