What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5
What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 7 and 8
Book Week was a great success, with students going all out with their costumes which was fantastic to see. The highlight was the school wide parade we had, where year levels got to show off all the effort they has put into preparing for the day. Well done everyone.
Year 5 students really enjoyed two great musicals in these past two weeks. Firstly, it was the Beaumaris Secondary show Puffs, which was really fun and a great experience for the students. Thank you to those who participated and made it happen to allow for us to come and watch. Then it was a musical of our own as we got to watch the Year 6 students perform Aladdin in the hall. This was an amazing experience, the Year 6 students and staff should be really proud of themselves and what they have been able to achieve!
Students will also continue their leadership workshops with the Year 1s and will engage with other year levels as well.
Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:
Wellbeing
Students will learn how to recognise emotions and engage in positive self-talk through Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons.
Literacy
Students have been reading about different natural disasters that occur within Australia, along with different ways in which we can prepare for these situations. This has been completed with a focus on fluency, with grammar lessons also associated with this. We will continue the Word Origins spelling lessons. The students are enjoying finding out the meaning of new morphemes each week.
Maths
We will returning to fractions to reinforce the key areas for the students, along with introducing new focus areas within comparing and ordering fractions with related denominators and adding fractions with the same denominator.
Knowledge Unit
Geography is the focus for this term’s Knowledge Unit. In this fortnight the students will continue learning about the different biomes present on each continent, the geographical features of continents and how countries around the world are interconnected with Australia. They will also learn about how places have changed over time and how these changes are managed. Also, we will discuss bushfire management plans and how people can do their best to prepare themselves if these situations occur.
Homework
Mathletics tasks
30minutes of reading each night
Reminder

The students will look at the natural and manmade features of Melbourne and it's landscape. Year 6
What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 7 and 8
Year 6 students have had a busy and exciting fortnight! They have been completely engrossed in rehearsals for our school musical, Aladdin, showing great teamwork and enthusiasm. In Numeracy, students have been developing their skills by adding and subtracting unrelated fractions, applying strategies to solve challenging problems. Alongside this, they have continued to enjoy reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World, sparking thoughtful insights.
Wellbeing
Year 6 students will explore important topics in their Wellbeing program this term, guided by the 4R’s Program – Rights, Responsibilities, Respect, and Relationships. They will engage in thoughtful discussions about violence, including its impact on individuals and communities, and will examine the issue of gender-based violence with maturity and empathy. Through these sessions, students will develop their understanding of respectful relationships and the importance of speaking out against harmful behaviours.
Literacy
Over the next fortnight, Year 6 students will continue reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World while also planning and writing their own engaging narrative pieces. They are looking forward to showcasing creativity and developing their storytelling skills.
Maths
In Numeracy, Year 6 students will continue developing their skills by adding and subtracting unrelated fractions, applying strategies to solve more challenging problems. They will also begin exploring angles, learning how to measure and identify them in a range of contexts.
Knowledge Unit
In Environmental Science, as part of their Science Knowledge Unit, Year 6 students will be investigating how different animals and plants have adapted to live in extreme weather conditions. They will explore fascinating survival strategies and consider how these adaptations help living things thrive in challenging environments.
Homework
Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. We encourage students to bring in their diaries every Monday to show their teacher what they have read each week.
