What's Happening in the Middle School

Year 3
What’s Happening in Year 3 in Weeks 7 and 8
What a busy few weeks it has been in Year 3! The kids have been full of excitement with our food incursion, the “Hour of Impact” incursion exploring all things AI, celebrating Book Week and enjoying the Year 6 Aladdin dress rehearsal. Our Book Week parade was a real highlight, and it was wonderful to see all the fantastic and creative costumes on display! We are looking forward to finishing off the term strong and celebrating all the wonderful learning that has taken place.
Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:
Wellbeing
We will reflect on the role models questionnaire students completed last week. This will be used to initiate conversations around how they can be a good role model for Preps and their peers.
Literacy
- We will look at the prefix ‘dis’
- We will review our learning on prefixes and suffixes
- We will begin to look at spelling changes when adding a suffix to a word
- We will continue to read Strom Boy and develop our summarising skills
We will continue to work on our information reports on a topic of our choice
Maths
- We will be naming and identifying the properties of 3D objects
We will begin to revise and practise strategies to solve addition and subtraction
Knowledge Unit
- On Monday, we visited CERES and learnt about farming and organic, local food
We will begin to reap what we have learnt from our excursion about healthy food and use this knowledge to think about what healthy meal we could design
Reminders
- Please ensure Library books are brought to school to be returned or reborrowed on your child’s library day
- It is expected that all students are reading 5 times a week for at least 20 minutes, this can be recorded in their diary and will be checked by their teacher
Year 4
What’s Happening in Year 4 in Weeks 7 and 8
Book Week was once again a huge success at Beaumaris Primary School! The Year 4 students were fortunate enough to participate in two Author sessions. One was with our current ‘Author Study Focus,’ Jess McGeachin, which was an online workshop that included information about how to illustrate books. The second Author Workshop was ‘in person’ and was, yet again, a fabulous Australian author - Jess Racklyeft. (Another Jess!) She shared the process and time it takes to research and then print a picture story book.
The Book Week Assembly was as bright and colourful as always. Our students all participated and also cheered the other grades when they paraded. Thank you to all the parents for assisting their children to select and dress up as their favourite book character.
We would also like to give a special shout out to all the students currently competing in ‘final season’ across all areas of sports. We have some excellent sports people in Year 4!
Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:
Wellbeing
Students will be continuing to listen to and discuss the “Grow Your Mindset’ podcast. The following two weeks will include discussions around joy as well as how to deliver an authentic apology.
Literacy
Our spelling program, Word Origins, will continue to be implemented throughout the second semester. Writing sessions will be focusing on information texts to support our subject area of science in Term 3. Our mentor texts for the entire term will continue to be written by Australian author, Jess McGeachin. With a focus on fluency and accuracy, students will be reading non-fiction texts. Students will also be writing their own information texts, using visual scaffolds to assist them when forming their paragraphs.
Maths
The Year 4 students will be reviewing and building on their knowledge of decimals. This will include addition and subtraction as well as percentages. All areas of Maths that were studied throughout the first semester will also be frequently reviewed to facilitate deeper understanding of concepts.
Knowledge Unit
Our Knowledge Unit in Term 3 will be ‘Science’. Students will be learning about simple physics such as forces as well as studying the impact of food chains in the living world.
Homework
The Year 4 students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders.
