Topic 2: Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (Explicit teaching)
In our last newsletter we explored ‘what we teach’, The Victorian Curriculum 2.0, this week we delve into ‘how we teach’ which is guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0).
All Victorian government schools are expected to begin implementing the VTLM 2.0 from 2025 and to have it fully embedded in their teaching and learning programs from the start of the 2028 school year. The VTLM 2.0 introduces an emphasis on the evidence about how students learn as the basis for effective teaching.
The VTLM 2.0 has two main elements: Elements of Learning and Elements of Teaching. In this News Letter, we focus on Explicit Teaching.
What does Explicit Teaching look like in our classrooms…
- More whole class, teacher-led explicit instruction, rather than student-led inquiry approach resulting in highly sequential and cumulative learning.
- Clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria written on the whiteboard
- Breaking down information into small manageable ‘chunks’
- Gradual release model - ‘I do’ (Modelling), ‘We do’ (Guided practice), and ‘You do’ (Independent practice).
- Greater emphasis on Responsive Teaching (feedback, support, extension) moment to moment throughout lessons and differentiation by support, rather than students working in a specific ‘ability group’, to ensure all students have equal access to age and year level appropriate curriculum content at the correct entry point for them.
