A strong sense of wellbeing contributes to good mental health. It also helps to
protect us from feelings of hopelessness and depression, acting as a ‘guardian’ of
our mental health.
Wellbeing helps us:
• Stay resilient when times get tough
• Build social supports and confidence
• Emerge from our challenges even stronger, knowing we have the ability to
cope with adversity.
What is ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing?’
‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ are five simple and effective ways to improve and
maintain your, and your family members, wellbeing. Using the 5 Ways to Wellbeing
in your day-to-day life will help you be happier and healthier.
At St Peter’s we use the 5 Ways to focus on ways to maintain and improve our mental wellbeing in our annual “Mental Health Month…& a bit” activities.
The 5 Ways are;
Keep learning: Learning new things and challenging your mind will give you a sense
of achievement. Learn something new regularly. Learning can be fun. It can give
you a sense of achievement and build your confidence.
Give: Helping others can give you a sense of purpose and belonging and by doing
so it assists in building friendships and making your community a better place. It’s as
simple as do something kind for a friend or stranger, thanking someone, smiling or
saying hello
Take Notice: Taking notice and slowing down helps you feel calm and relaxed. It’s
about learning to enjoy each moment and being aware of the ‘here and now’.
Connect: Connect with people around you; with family, friends, neighbours and
community. Think of these social connections as important in your life and spend
time developing them. Building these relationships will support and strengthen you
every day.
Be Active: Being active and moving your body helps you stay fit and healthy, both
mentally and physically.
How are we using the 5 Ways to Wellbeing at St Peter’s?
For the next 5 weeks we will be focusing on one of the 5 Ways each week, with our Big Question focusing on learning and discussing how the 5 Ways can help us. Break Club activities have been developed to help show us how to use the framework each day, and staff will be engaging in learning activities about the 5 Ways to Wellbeing.
