In celebration of our 70th anniversary

In the early years of our school, the House Athletic sports featured events including: the diamond throw, the hockey dribble, leader ball, sack races, tunnel spry, crossball, and skipping relays. The distances also covered the old imperial measurements, so for example, we had sprints of 50, 75 and 100 yards.  We also held a marching competition in conjunction with the athletic sports which appears to have been contrasted fervently.

In the swimming sports there were events from the outset like the cork scramble and junior rescue and novelty races. The cork scramble was a staple of our swimming sports until the early 21st century. Every cork scrambled represented a house point for the swimmer who retrieved it from the pool. In the earliest years the most junior swimmers competed as Under 12s, not Under 13 as they do today and some events were divided into junior and senior competitions.

In the formative years, house points were not only awarded in the main swimming and athletic carnivals, but also for social service contributions.

Michael Constable

Michael Constable (known as Mick) passed away suddenly in June.  He was our Principal from 1983 until the end of 1987.

Michael came directly from the Education Department being offered  a choice of Mentone Girls' High School, as it was then known, or Melbourne High School. Fortunately, he chose us.

Because of his connection with the Education Department he was able to organise funding of the main wing where all the current Principal class offices  the office area, First Aid and the Staff common room are now located. He also had oversight of, and procured funding for,  establishing the library where it's now situated. It had previously been confined to some old classrooms.

All these areas were in need of revamping and this marked the early stages of our school embarking upon a building program which has signalled our transition to the modern education facility which we are today.
