Year 6 Spotlight

6A Reflections

Interschool sport

This term on Fridays we have been doing training for our interschool sport gala day at the end of the term. The options for the sports this term were; ultimate frisbee, tennis, and spikeball. In training we have been playing games to help us in the tournament.

Writing Incursion

Last Monday we had a man named Chris Bennett. He was the author of ‘Roy Boy’ a memoir novel, and he taught us about memoirs. He told us about how to write a memoir, and about his own childhood memories of growing up in Fitzroy. He shared about playing marbles at school, Fishing for yabbies, using string and tin cans to make a ‘phone’ and how he used newspaper to make a footy and played with friends. He was very inspiring for the year 6s as they are anticipating writing their own Year 6 Graduation Memoirs.

Term 3 Interschool Sport

At the end of last term Grade 6s competed in interschool sports. Some people played AFL, some played soccer and others played netball. We would all train on a Friday afternoon for two sessions. Teams who qualified from the gala day made Division, both boys soccer teams had to play each other to make division. My team won by one goal in a penalty shootout! Both netball teams made it through to division. The AFL team was unlucky not to make it through but still tried very hard. Overall everyone had a great time no matter the outcome.

ART FOR ALL!!!

This past term, all of Grade 6 has been busily preparing for our biggest event of the year, ART FOR ALL!  Lots of us are doing the Maker’s Market which is made up of lots of stalls run by grade fives and sixes. People are selling lots of things but there is one rule we must follow, everything we sell has to be homemade. Grade sixes can also apply to do sous chefing which is making food for the gala night. They can also apply to be hosts for the gala night, which means that they will show guests around and help with lots of other things.  Some of us are also volunteering for the ArtZone. In the ArtZone, the grade sixes will teach others how to do the crafts (friendship bracelets) and help them if they get stuck.

Term 3 Writing

This term in writing we have been focusing on writing our own memoir about an important experience in our lives. These memoirs will be in the grade six yearbook, celebrating the fun and shaping memories from our time at Fairfield primary school.

To help inspire us, Chris Bennett, the author of Roy Boy, came to the school and spoke to us about how to put emotion and life into our words, as well as how to properly structure the story to keep readers engaged.

We have read multiple memoirs to give an idea of what we're going to write, including Lion - A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley, which we have been focusing on reading. This has been a very good learning opportunity, and has really helped develop our skills in this subject.
