Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,

Student Recognition Award

Thank you to all the students who created entries for our digital certificate competition. We were amazed by the creative, colourful designs. The winning design for our Semester 2 award was created by Aston and Remy from 3/4F!

What's happened in 3/4 this fortnight?

English

During our Structured Literacy Daily Review sessions, we have learned the rules for when ‘c’ and ‘g’ make their hard and soft sounds, and we’ve studied ‘super’ as a prefix. Learning to differentiate between simple, compound and complex sentences has been the feature of our Grammar lessons.

We have continued reading Storm Boy by Colin Thiele, and noting his use of various literary devices including similes, metaphors and personification.

Also, we have started writing an information report text on the Coorong in South Australia (which is the setting of Storm Boy). We followed the model of writing our introduction paragraph with a general statement, specific statement and thesis statement, and now we are writing the first body paragraph.

Maths

As we explore multiplicative thinking, we have explored the connections between repeated addition and multiplication, and repeated subtraction and division. This week, our content has included fact families and arrays (groups of items arranged into rows and columns). Our classes went outside to gather nature items and then arrange them into arrays before writing the related multiplication and division facts.

This term, our Maths sessions start with Daily 5 - five questions reviewing a variety of previously taught concepts. We are also providing regular practice of time tables facts on timestables.com in order to increase automatic recall.

Inquiry

As we continue our From Farm to Fashion… From Farm to Plate… unit, we have explored the production processes involved in growing through to making a pair of jeans, and we have researched a region of Australia where major food or fiber plants and animals are grown or bred.

We will be using these for our upcoming Design and Technology lessons where we will be designing and constructing nesting and resting homes for our local wildlife. Please leave boxes at home until Week 7 (Monday 1st September).
