English Innovation

Year level: 2
This Term, In Year 2, learners have been diving into the exciting world of narrative writing. Learners have been exploring how to create engaging stories by developing clear settings, interesting characters, and plotlines with a beginning, middle, and end. They have been learning to use descriptive language to bring their stories to life and to structure their ideas logically. By reading a variety of mentor texts, students gained inspiration and began to see how authors build suspense, solve problems, and wrap up their stories with satisfying conclusions.
A key focus has also been on understanding and identifying the main idea of a text. Through shared writing and reflections, learners have practiced summarizing and picking out supporting details. This skill has tied in beautifully with our lessons on merging stories, where students combine ideas from multiple texts or retell familiar tales with their own creative twist. These learning opportunities have strengthened comprehension and encouraged imaginative thinking, setting a strong foundation for merging plotlines in narrative writing.
Year level: 3
This Term, Year 3 learners are stepping into the exciting world of Choose Your Own Adventure narratives. In this engaging process, students are learning how to create branching storylines where the reader decides what happens next. They’re developing important writing skills such as planning story paths, building strong characters, and using descriptive language to bring each scene to life. Every learner becomes both author and reader, crafting imaginative journeys full of twists, surprises, and multiple endings.
Throughout the unit, students will map out their ideas, explore the power of choice in storytelling, and learn how to keep readers engaged with exciting plot turns. By the end of the term, each student will have created their own mini adventure book to share—a unique story where readers can choose their own way through the tale. This is a creative endeavour to build critical and creative thinking, imagination and a deep sense of purpose when writing.
Year level: 4
Term Two for Year Four English Innovators will see students engage with more complex text structures, language features, and audience awareness, working from the Year Five Curriculum. This includes generating texts with increasing fluency and purpose. Key writing elements—such as cohesive devices, sentence complexity, and figurative language, will be introduced and explored through high-impact writing mini-lessons and small group conferencing. Students will be explicitly taught to manipulate language to create mood, tone, and meaning, fostering a sense of ownership and style in their authorship.
A central focus of the program is student voice transfer—the ability to choose their own transfer opportunity and retain a unique and authentic voice while adapting to different text types and audiences. Through genre-specific investigations, students are supported in recognising how their voice can shift or evolve depending on writing desires and interests. For example, a student’s curiosity in science may inform the tone of an informative piece, while their sense of humour or empathy might become prominent in a narrative response.
We look forward to another rigorous term of learning.
Year level: 5
In Term 2, the Year 5 English Innovators will explore the complex yet whimsical creative process of lyric writing. In beginning this exploration, they will take a deep dive into the world of poetry as the cornerstone for engaging lyric writing. Through this, they will learn to utilise a range of poetic devices with a focus on rhyme, imagery, rhythm and sound patterns, and thematic messaging. After analysing popular songs for their lyrics, students will then choose their own theme to write a lyric, showcasing their learnt poetic techniques. The lyrics will then be added to a pre-created melody, and using AI technology, students will create a digitally processed song. Completed songs will then be part of the school’s music rotation throughout the day.
Year level: 6
With whispers of the school production beginning this term, the Year 6 English Innovators will be putting their expertise into full swing as they begin an exploration into how language is used in a commercial promotional setting. They will investigate how theatrical performances are promoted through a variety of media including performance programs, posters, flyers, newspaper articles and advertisements and will create these for use leading up to and during the school production. As part of the performance program creation, the Year 6 English Innovators will learn how to write a synopsis for a performance which provides a summary of the highlights, whilst leaving the readers wanting to know more.
