Sub School Leaders

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a busy and productive few weeks for our Secondary Sub School students, filled with valuable real-world learning experiences.

Our Future Ready students recently participated in local excursions to Broadmeadows Shopping Centre as part of their Travel Training Program. As they made their way on foot—walking approximately 20 minutes each way—they had the opportunity to practise a range of important skills. These included road safety, reading pedestrian signals, identifying landmarks, following directions, and increasing independence when navigating public spaces. These excursions play a crucial role in helping students build confidence and practical life skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Meanwhile, our VPC students took part in the Metro Trains “Get On-Board” Travel Experience. This fantastic initiative offered students the chance to travel and learn on-board a train and at a Metro station (Flinders Street), with content tailored to support their transition into greater community participation.

Key learning areas included:

  • Using the Myki ticketing system
  • Accessing and using the PTV journey planner
  • Understanding how to seek emergency assistance when travelling
  • Practising safe travelling behaviour
  • Learning about accessibility features on trains and in stations

In other exciting news, you may have noticed that our canteen program has been temporarily paused. This is due to a re-structuring process aimed at making the program more student-led and engaging. A big congratulations to our Room 21 students and the staff supporting them, who have taken the lead on revamping the canteen menu. They began by brainstorming a wide range of food and snack ideas, then conducted a survey across all secondary students to determine the five most popular items. They are now working on designing a brand-new menu template. We look forward to sharing the updated menu with you soon. We're also excited about the upcoming opportunities for Room 21 and Room 27 students to be involved in creating, managing, and running the canteen as part of their learning.

Thank you for your continued support.
