Around the Grounds – Junior Football Kicks Off!

Last weekend, on Saturday 3 May, the KWS Kodiaks, KWS Kinetics, KWS Kicks, and KWS Kestrels took to the field for their first official matches in the Orange and District Football Association’s 2025 Football Competition — and what a display of teamwork, energy, and school spirit it was.

The Kodiaks opened their season with a dominant performance, showing strength across the field and real cohesion in both attack and defence. The Kinetics impressed with their fast ball movement and quick transitions, while the Kicks played with grit and determination, holding their ground in a hard-fought midfield contest. The Kestrels brought great energy and focus to their debut game, building on the confidence and unity they’ve shown in training.

From strong defensive work to composed finishes, our players have already shown how much they’ve grown since our early training sessions last term — a testament to the effort and enthusiasm all KWS Footballers bring to Monday ‘KWS Club’ rotations and Wednesday team trainings.

A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches — Coach Keir, Coach Laffey, Coach Gibson, Coach Dawson, and Coach Moloney — for guiding and inspiring our players. We also sincerely thank our Duke of Ed Senior School student helpers — Harry Chapman, Vivaan Desai, Max Kenny, Ben Chambers, and Jane Bruce — whose leadership and support have added so much to the program already. It’s especially meaningful to have Harry, Vivaan, Max and Ben back down in the Junior School, serving our community as Junior School Alumni.

The 2025 season is shaping up to be brilliant — go KWS!

KWS Kestrels Soaring High

It all began with a simple question: “Why not us?”A group of Junior School girls, a ball at their feet, and a shared desire — not just to play, but to come together as a team. To compete. To represent. To wear the school colours with pride — and to do it side by side.

In 2025, as Kinross Wolaroi School (KWS) proudly marks 50 years of co-education, that question was answered with action. The KWS Kestrels, our first-ever all-female Junior School Football Team, took flight. And what a flight it’s been.

Their Kestrel story couldn’t be more timely. As Australia celebrates Female Football Week (May 2–11), we are reminded of the strength and spirit of women and girls in sport — not just as players, but as leaders, changemakers, and trailblazers. In their debut season, the Kestrels have brought this spirit to life.

Behind every great team is a great coach. Coach Gibson has begun the 2025 season leading this spirited squad with care, strategy, and belief. Together with Sophia Martin, Charlie Byrne, Ruby Harris, Lilly Kilby, Sophie Kerdic, Lulu Widauer, Imogen Flowers, Ivy Coleman, Eleanor Dellar, Harriet Gibson, Edith Toohey, Frankie Rohr, and Sofia Roweth, these ‘Kestrels’ have laid the foundation for a new era in junior football at KWS.

In this golden anniversary year of co-education, the KWS Kestrels have written their own chapter in the Kinross Wolaroi story — one that will echo long after the final whistle.

A Historic Victory for the KWS Lakers - Tuesday 7 April

A huge congratulations to the KWS Lakers, who have etched their names into school history as the Junior School’s first ever PCYC basketball champions. In what can only be described as a thrilling and hard-fought final against the formidable Spring Hill side, the Lakers demonstrated exceptional skill, unwavering determination, and remarkable teamwork.

The match was a true nail-biter, with both teams locked in a tight contest from the opening whistle. The lead shifted multiple times, and for much of the game, it remained uncertain who would claim the coveted title. With only four minutes remaining and trailing 20–22, the Lakers, under the steady guidance and strategic leadership of head coach Peter McCormack, dug deep and surged forward.

In a breathtaking finale, the team delivered two clutch baskets, swinging the momentum in their favour and clinching a 24–22 victory. The roar of the crowd filled the stadium as the final buzzer sounded—an unforgettable moment of triumph and pride. The Lakers’ resolve and composure under pressure were truly inspiring, marking this championship not just as a win on the scoreboard, but as a testament to their spirit and sportsmanship.

Bravo to the KWS Lakers on this incredible achievement—your legacy begins here!
