It's not everyday that you get to represent your country. Also it is an amazing feat for a small country school to have 2 representatives.

HOCKEY

The hockey season is off to an exciting and energetic start! This year, Kinross Wolaroi proudly fields nine teams across the 14s, 16s, 18s, and women’s competitions. Our players benefit from the guidance of a dedicated and knowledgeable coaching team, who are committed to sharing their expertise and ensuring a fun, productive season for all.

A significant highlight this year is the introduction of a 2nd grade women’s team, reflecting our ongoing efforts to build on the strong foundation already established at Kinross Wolaroi. Entering another team in the senior women’s competition provides more girls with valuable opportunities to develop their skills and compete at a higher level. The new team made an impressive debut over the weekend, stepping up and playing cohesively in their first match, which bodes well for the season ahead.

Our 1st grade team also began their campaign with a commanding win against Cyms on Sunday. The team played with great enthusiasm and passion, scoring early goals and securing the result within the first quarter. With a few new faces in the squad this year, there is a sense of optimism as they look to build on last year’s successes.

Last week, 21 of our students represented WAS across three teams at the AICES Hockey Championships in Newcastle. The U15 girls team dominated their division, winning all their games throughout the day. The U19 boys, despite being a young side, performed admirably against tough competition, while the U19 girls took part in both trials and matches against students from other associations, acquitting themselves well in all games.

Congratulations to the following students selected for AICES teams to compete at the NSW CIS Championships next week at Moorebank:

  • U15 Girls: Paxton Buckerfield, Phoebe Lyons, Isabelle Provost. Shadow: Stella Mitchell
  • U19 Girls: Phoebe Hunter, Abbie Lyons, Zoe Wood
  • U15 Boys: Harry Yelland
  • U19 Boys: Shadow: Rhys Jones

Earlier this term, a large contingent of our students was selected for Orange Representative teams to play in the State Championships this season. Congratulations to:

  • U14 Girls: Paxton Buckerfield, Josie Curry, Phoebe Lyons, Mackenzie Mitchell, Stella Mitchell, Emily Wood. Shadow: Ingrid West
  • U14 Boys: Jock Bowman, Freddie Mendl
  • U14 Boys Development: George Cooke, Jonathan Wilkinson
  • U16 Girls: Paxton Buckerfield, Abbie Lyons, Phoebe Lyons, Alexandra Whitehead, Clare Wood
  • U18 Boys: Rhys Jones, Luca Popa
  • U18 Girls: Phoebe Hunter, Abbie Lyons, Phoebe Lyons, Clare Wood, Zoe Wood

Well done to all players on a fantastic start to the season! Please remember that game and training times will continue to be updated on the Hub as we await the opening of the new Smith Field turf. Keep up the great work, and best of luck for the rest of the season!

Rugby Report

Last Saturday saw our Rugby season officially kick off. Saturday morning for our boys started with a Jersey Presentation Breakfast. Our U13 A’s presented the jerseys to the 1st XV and the U14A’s presented the jerseys to the 2nd XV. It was a memorable experience for all the boys, and we thank the parents who attended, and all the parents from our Rugby Club who prepared the breakfasts.

We hosted St. Pats College throughout the day and results were fairly evenly spread across the day with a great crowd attending and supporting our boys from 11.00am through to 5.00pm.

Our U14s and U16s girls had a bus trip to Cooma. Unfortunately, the teams they were due to play didn’t have enough numbers, so our girls mixed in with the few players they did have and had some games. Despite the disappointment, many girls said they had a great day and McDonalds at Yass is still yet to recover from their visit on the way home!!! Our Opens Girls played against Canberra Grammar in Canberra and had an emphatic win and reports suggest it was much better than anything they experienced last season.

This Saturday we have boys and girls playing at home in what will be a first for the school. In exciting news our Opens Girls will be kicking off right before the 1st XV game. With most other teams at home it will be the biggest day of Rugby Kinross has experienced, and we look forward to a huge crowd supporting all our players.

Bring on Saturday.

The Ladies have started the season well. They were the headline game at School this weekend. With a couple of new players in the squad this season the team is still getting to know their best formation. Despite this after a shaky first five minutes they dominated the Millthorpe ladies. There were a few shots on target and with a little more accuracy could have taken the lead. A breakaway by Millthorpe and a long bomb beat new keeper (Gappy Olivia) and they went into the break one down. The second half was a facsimile of the first with KWS dominant but unfortunately goalless. Good signs for the season.

1st men

The boys kicked off the season well despite an election being called on the first weekend of the season. Missing a couple of regulars due to political commitments made the game hard work but the U15 players who backed up for their 2nd or 3rd game of the 24-hour period were excellent. Ex-Services were an experienced team who moved the ball well with their experience telling with a couple of early goals. We fought back with an excellent goal from Harry Chapman from a tight angle. The opposition scored again but the always alert Mr Willis scored from some great build up play to keep the pressure on. Despite coming home with the wind in their sails the boys were unlucky to go down 3-2.

15/16

It was always going to be a tough game against the Waratah Rebels and chances on goal were few and far between. The mix of U16 and U15 players led to a few new members joining the team from Year 10 and they blended in seamlessly. The defense fought hard and the midfield gave the opposition no time on the ball. With 15 minutes to go the side was 2-1 up but a collision left George Nash with a bloodied nose so a change in keeper was needed. The team fought hard but this change in the defense led to an unfortunate mix up and a draw was the result. Things look bright for this young squad.

14’s

The U14’s started with a bang. Then another bang and in 3 minutes were 2-0 up. This allowed the team to play to their strengths as the midfield worked tirelessly and the defense was impregnable. This allowed the attacking talents to overcome the opposition and the ended the game 8-0 winners. Their second game of the day was more of a reckoning as they faced last years champions and with heavy legs were 5-1 down with no hope in sight. They rallied and scored two goals in the last few minutes to highlight their desire to become a team that will be in the finals when they come around.

13’s

With a new group of players having their first game ever it was a tense start to the game. CYMS Gold have a reputation for being one of the better teams in the competition and while KWS fought hard through the game there was to be an unfortunate result. Coach Kelly was very happy with the performance stating that the team gelled well and with about ten minutes to go were 2-2. Unfortunately they let in a couple of last minute goals. Coach Kelly is very upbeat about the season and is very happy with both the talent and commitment in the squad.

Netball

AICES Netball Carnivals

Last week, eight Kinross Wolaroi students proudly represented WAS at the AICES Open and U15 Netball Carnivals. Both teams played exceptional netball throughout the day, demonstrating teamwork, determination, and resilience. Competing against strong opposition, both the Open and U15 teams finished 4th overall—an impressive result considering the high level of competition. Several matches were tightly contested, and a number of our players were named in the possibles and probables selection—a testament to their individual talent and effort. Congratulations to all players for an outstanding start to the representative season and for representing our School and the Netball Club with pride.

U15: Isla Callaghan, Milly Condon, Georgia Tancred & Paxton Buckerfield

Opens: Grace Tancred, Grace Simpson, Xanthe Staniforth & Chloe Mulcahy

MensLine Cup

The MensLine Cup brought together Year 12 boys from eight schools across the Lithgow-Orange region for a fantastic afternoon of competitive and good-spirited netball at James Sheahan. After weeks of training and preparation—particularly their three-game series against our male staff—the boys took to the court with confidence and energy. While both of our teams narrowly missed the semi-finals, finishing 3rd and 4th in their pools, they played with heart and were great ambassadors for the school and the important cause of men's mental health.

A highlight of the day was the Skills Competition, where Kinross Wolaroi entered two teams of two. Clay McKinnon and Tom Hosie advanced to the grand final against Orange High School, showcasing their sharp passing and shooting to take out the trophy—an exciting victory cheered on by the rest of our squad.

The Allstar Staff Games were hotly contested, with our staff drawing with James Sheahan and narrowly losing to OHS by a single goal. Thank you to all students and staff who took part and supported this special event raising awareness and funds for MensLine Australia.

KWS Netball Club – Round 1 Wrap-Up

The 2025 season got off to a fantastic start over the weekend, with the Kinross Wolaroi Netball Club taking to the courts for Round 1. Across all divisions, players showcased determination, teamwork, and enthusiasm—setting a strong tone for the season ahead. From tightly contested internal matches like the 4ths vs 5ths and U17 and U15 showdowns, to impressive wins across a number of age groups, it was an exciting return to competitive play.

Standout performances included the U15.1s’ confident 51–38 win over Hawks Elite, the U13C’s 19–9 victory over Hawks Marvasti, and the U12s putting on a solid display in their 14–6 win over CYMS. Even in narrow losses, teams demonstrated strong potential and resilience that will only grow as the season progresses.

A special mention to our umpires, many of whom were officiating their first games of the year. Their professionalism, confidence, and commitment were noted across the courts and contributed to the smooth running of the day. Well done to all players, coaches, and umpires for a successful and spirited start to the KWS Netball season.

Hawks Basketball Grand Final

Tension was high as the KWS Hawks took to the court to play a grand final match against the top of the ladder United Onyx.  United Onyx dominated the 1st half with their layups and the Hawks were down 6 by half time. In the third quarter the Hawks were ready to pounce and momentum had switched in their favour even though they were now down by 8. The whistle blew at the start of the final quarter and the Hawks began to claw back the margin. Powerful defense by Bonnie, Pip and Sarah prevented Onyx from scoring.  Nell was unstoppable with full court attacking play.  Nell, Daisy and Jess shot baskets with pinpoint accuracy. With 2 minutes to go the Hawks took the lead and the crowd were on their feet.  Nine baskets to one in the final quarter and the Hawks came away with a win 32 to 24. What a game, what a win, what fun!  A shout out to Mr Taylor, MIC of Basketball for his coaching tips. Premier for two consecutive seasons! Well done girls!!
