         Ulysses Community Report

Term 2, 2025

Welcome to The Ulysses Community Newsletter. We have arrived at the middle of Term 2, and we teachers are exuberant about the educational and social advancements of the Ulysses community. We have seen substantial progress in your child/children in all areas of the curriculum. There are still a few weeks remaining till school holidays, and we look forward to achieving new heights in our students’ education.

Reading

In Reading, we are currently focusing on different mentor texts, and the students have developed their understanding about preferences, making connections and reading with a steady pace. Students have started using various strategies, such as blending sounds to read words, recognising punctuation marks, and attempting to read with a steady pace during independent reading. Thus far, we have seen ample success in the reading skills of most of our students. For the remainder of the term, we will continue to read various mentor texts and work on identifying different text features to enhance our understanding of the texts.

Writing

In writing, we are currently working on writing simple sentences. We are focusing on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Our students can come up with various nouns, verbs, and adjectives related to the given picture each week. We are working on how to make a sentence using a subject and a verb. We have seen substantial growth in our students’ work in creating simple sentences using different nouns, verbs and adjectives. In the remainder of the term, we plan to introduce Adverbs to our students, enabling them to create more effective sentences with confidence.

Maths

We are now focusing on place value and addition; we have provided our students with place value charts so that they can recognise the value of each number. We have seen a massive success in our students’ ability to write or make a two-digit or three-digit number. We have exposed our students to various addition strategies, learning resources, and manipulatives to support their understanding of this subject, as well as real-life scenarios to enhance their comprehension. In measurement, students are learning how to collect data. Students are provided with various real-life scenarios and are asked to collect data in class.

Inquiry

In inquiry, we have been learning about geography, focusing on different features of places, their locations, various weather conditions, and how to be sustainable by reducing, reusing, and recycling. To help our students understand the topic, they participate in various immersion centres, including those focused on weather, sustainability, and our community.

Immersion centre 1-The weather affects all areas.

Immersion Centre 2-Constructed vs Natural

Immersion Centre 3-Rubbish/Recycling

Students participated in various activities related to our topic to gain a deeper understanding and become effective learners.

SEL

In SEL, as a part of the Resilience project, we are learning about feelings- how to understand different feelings using clues and identifying the feeling through recognising changes in our body. We also learnt about Empathy, how to show empathy to others, and how our actions affect them. We also learnt about strengths and respect, and how we can show respect from an Aboriginal perspective.
