Auslan

Australian Sign Language (Auslan)

At the start of term 2, Aitken Hill students have been learning how to sign family members. Younger year levels have been listening to Auslan songs and stories that have an Auslan interpreter translating the text. The older years levels have been introduced to signing sentences and describing their family and people through their own depictions.

Prep - Year 3

Students have been taught the signs for; mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa, aunty, uncle, cousin, niece and nephew. Students have been identifying known and learnt signs in stories and songs. With this word bank,  students have been able to sign words from the drawings they have made. In addition to this, they have also begun to create simple Auslan sentences such as "I have 6 cousins", "2 aunties".

Year 4 - Year 6

Students have been taught the signs for; mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa, aunty, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew, woman, man, girl, boy, adult, friend, children, baby, neighbour and people. Students have also expanded their word bank with many adjectives to create sentences, these include colours, external and internal character features such as beautiful, confident and brave. "My character has curly brown hair and is brave and kind".

Auslan is the new language at Aitken Hill primary and so we have been excited to see students' enthusiasm in all areas of their learning.
