Grade 5/6

Grade 5/6 have been working hard to finish off units of work this past fortnight! In English, students have finalised their factual recount draft on the 1967 Australian Referendum. Students spent time analysing their notes and writing their third body paragraph and conclusion onto the provided paragraph structure templates. After independently attempting the tasks, students then received teacher feedback and edited their work, before putting the paragraphs together. This independent work was quite a challenge for some students, as it really expanded their thinking regarding paragraph structure, varying sentence starters and avoiding repetition. Well done to everyone for their hard work on completing this! Next week, we will be publishing good copies of our recounts.

Within Mathematics, students have been calculating the perimeter of shapes and area of rectangles. We have also explored how to find the perimeter and area of composite shapes, and how to calculate the cost of covering an area, including the area of composite shapes, which really stretched some of our students’ thinking! Congratulations to everyone for demonstrating persistence and determination when faced with mathematical challenges this week!

Science and Humanities has seen a lovely crossover, with a focus across both subjects being bushfires. Students have been exploring the effects of bushfires on the Earth’s surface and atmosphere, the environmental costs of bushfires, and how the impact of bushfires can be reduced by humans and technological innovations. Lots of rich discussions have been had in class, and it has been fabulous seeing students make connections to this content.

We are also incredibly proud of our school captains for representing George Street at the 2025 Reconciliation Walk. Thank you to Olivia and Kahn for representing our school with such pride and respect.

Have an enjoyable and safe long weekend everyone!
