Grade 2/3/4

It has been a busy two weeks for the 2/3/4's as we head into Week 8 and nearly the end of the Term!

In Literacy we have been studying a new book titled 'Off We Go Around Australia' by Roland Harvey. The 2/3/4's have been using inferences to predict where the family will go and what adventures they may get up to throughout the book. We have also been incorporating Geography into the lessons by discussing Australia and the different states based on the locations, such as Crabby Spit (Queensland), Kata Tjuta (Northern Territory) and Coober Pedy (South Australia). It has been great to see the students engaged in discussions we have had about the text and their insights they have provided, based on the story.

In Numeracy the 2/3/4's have been exploring 2D shapes and that polygons are a shape that have 3 or more straight sides. We have been discussing in depth the straight sides, curved sides and vertices of different shapes and how these are classified. They have also enjoyed making composite shapes by combining various shapes to create items such as hands, bicycles and stars. The 2/3/4's are now delving deeper into symmetry and whether or not shapes have rotational symmetry.

In Science we have been exploring Earth's resources such as rocks, minerals and soils. They enjoyed going outside to conduct an experiment of soils by putting such sand in a jar to watch its' properties as water was added.

In Humanities the 2/3/4's have been delving into the First Fleet. We have been looking at the impacts of the European settlers on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This tied well into National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week as we explored these impacts in further depths and the repercussions this has had.
