Ivanhoe's Night of Success at MSAC
Emily Stevens, Year 12, Ridgeway Campus
Leading up to the AGSV Swimming Championships, our team worked hard and demonstrated immense commitment and dedication throughout training to be ready for the event. Swimming at the AGSV is a team effort; despite competing individually, our points all make a difference and contribute towards our girls and boys teams final results. By the end of the training season, we had built a strong team connection and a culture of support and encouragement.
On the night, the girls and boys teams fought hard and gave it their absolute all. It was an extremely close battle throughout, with every point making a huge difference. Ivanhoe spirit was at its strongest, with the Ivy Army and passionate support from our whole school community. Their energy fueled the swimmers’ adrenaline and excitement, creating an incredible atmosphere that contributed to our success.
All our swimmers raced hard, many achieved personal best times and several AGSV records were broken. Ciara Jeffs had an outstanding swim in the U14 50m backstroke, breaking the AGSV record. The girls’ U17 4 x 50m medley relay team also broke the AGSV record with a very strong performance. A standout from the boys team was Eli Billman, who broke two AGSV records in both the Boys U16 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Our girls team did incredibly well overall and won the premiership by just half a point, while our boys team proudly secured third place, a steady climb from previous years.
I felt incredibly grateful to be captain of the team alongside Eliza and the boys captain, Mathew. It was such a proud moment for us, and an incredible way to finish off my swimming journey at Ivanhoe.

On Friday March 28th, the AGSV swimming championships took place at MSAC where both of Ivanhoe Grammar Schools’ highly competitive girls and boys swim teams competed for their individual championship cups. After plenty of intense early morning trainings throughout Term 4 2024 and Term 1 this year, plus a few Friday night trials, the team was ready to race. For the girls’ team, it was a close competition as usual between rivals Mentone and PEGS however, led by co captains Emily Stevens and Eliza Burge, the girls were able to rise above the challenges and finish in 1st place only half a point in front of Mentone, making history as the closest AGSV championship finish.
While it was a team effort a few highlights for the girls were Zoe Macaulay winning the girls 14 years 50 metre butterfly, 50 metre backstroke and four times 50 metre freestyle relay with teammates Mimi Forck, Fiona Perry and Athalie Marshell. For the boys' team, led by Matthew Golding, it was a hard-fought 3rd place behind Trinity and Camberwell Grammer, displaying great improvements from previous years. A highlight for the boys was watching Eli Billman winning the boys 16 years 100m freestyle and breaking two records in the 16 years 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. Overall, the swimming season was a highlight for many students, and it was a fantastic achievement for the girls to walk away with the cup.
