The Swimming Carnival
Mia Garfi, Year 12, Ridgeway Campus
The Swimming Carnival this year meant a little bit more to me that it had in previous years. Not only was it the start of many lasts but it was also an opportunity for Jake, my fellow house captain and I to present everything we had been working so hard towards for the past few weeks.
As Lincoln House, we collectively decided to dress up together as Peter Pan and Tinkerbell to get in the house spirit and show off our green. The festivities commenced at 8:15am at my house where some of the Lincoln Year 12s met, shared some breakfast and took some photos before the day started. We all then took the bus together to the Northcote Aquatic Centre, providing a lot of entertainment to those on the bus with us! When we arrived, all the Year 12s met outside the pools to take photos with our house leaders and wait for other students to arrive for the Year 12 entrance. Lincoln went in second, which was the calm before it was all hands-on deck.
Before Jake and I knew it, it was lunch time, and we were exhausted from getting different students in the pool. We then had the prefect race, which was just hilarious, followed by the chants as well. Even though the Lincoln chants didn’t go the way we had planned, we still had so much fun. Whilst we ended up coming in 3rd overall for the day, with the amount of work and effort that was put forward we were really pleased. The Year 12’s were fantastic in helping round up all the students and Jake and I were so proud of the house spirt that was shown. We look forward to the Athletics carnival, but I am so thankful for the turn out of the Swimming Carnival. Go Lincoln!
The Athletics Carnival
Evie Metzner, Year 7, Ridgeway Campus
The 2025 Athletics Carnival at Ivanhoe Grammar School was a truly memorable and enjoyable experience as it was my first time. I loved the energy everyone brought on the day with everyone cheering each other on and showing great team spirit for their houses. It was inspiring to see the support and encouragement that the students showed at the athletics carnival. I had a lot of fun taking part in the races especially the 50-metre relay, and I’m looking forward to many more athletics carnivals in the future.
Zara Shaw, Year 12, Ridgeway Campus
Going into the year Jeremy and I were excited to build on the great Athelstane house culture and hopefully experience a few wins along the way. The Athletics Carnival was a bittersweet experience for many of the Year 12s. While we were all excited to participate and move around in our houses, it marked the end of a huge part of our Ivanhoe Grammar School journey. For myself, it was the culmination of 10 years of house events at Ivanhoe. Despite knowing it was our final carnival, I was still so excited for the day ahead. On the day, Athelstane managed to fill every event and have some stand out performances in the relays and long-distance events, all of which played a vital role in our eventual win. Without the effort and contribution of all Athelstane students, not to mention the Year 12 leaders & students and my fellow House Prefect, Jeremy, none of this would have been possible.
This year, I have truly felt a sense of comradery within the house and as mentioned before, a great house culture. I have been lucky enough to witness the competitiveness and investment from all students that has resulted in our wins at both major carnivals! Being a house prefect has been one of my most valuable and cherished experiences at Ivanhoe Grammar School as I have been able to connect with people from all year levels and develop my leadership through these relationships. The year isn’t over though, and Jeremy and I are excited to see what else Athelstane can achieve this year!
