Nursing Student for a Day – LATROBE Experience

Our students had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a nursing student, thanks to an engaging and hands-on session facilitated by Rikke from La Trobe University and current nursing student, Jackson.

Throughout the day, students gained valuable insights into careers in health and nursing. They explored nursing pathways, entry requirements, and the differences between Enrolled Nurses (ENs) and Registered Nurses (RNs). Information about salary expectations and helpful secondary school subjects was also shared. Jackson provided a personal perspective, sharing his journey as a nursing student and highlighting the strong support La Trobe offers its students.

The visit included a tour of the university’s training ward, where students rotated through practical activities in small groups. They learned:

  • How to take blood pressure
  • CPR techniques through a fun and interactive session — even Mr Bristol and Ms Kerr joined in!
  • Proper handwashing techniques to meet healthcare hygiene standards
  • How to measure heart rates
  • How to diagnose patients using case studies and lifelike medical mannequins

This immersive experience gave our students a deeper understanding of the healthcare profession and inspired many to consider a future in nursing or health related pathways.

Careers Day Out 2025

This year, in response to industry and business feedback, Careers Day Out was condensed into a dynamic one-day event held at the Shepparton Showgrounds. The day featured an impressive array of workshops, demonstrations, and talks designed to give students meaningful insight into the world of work and local career opportunities.

We were fortunate with perfect weather as over 300 Year 10 and Year 11 VCE-VM students from GSSC were transported to the event. Throughout the day, our students engaged with the activities and information provided by the stall holders.

With over 3,000 students in attendance, Careers Day Out once again delivered an inspiring experience. It offered valuable exposure to a wide variety of career pathways, sparking ideas for students' futures. The event also served as a great platform for staff to connect with industry stakeholders, further supporting future planning and student development initiatives.

Tertiary Information Service (TIS) Event 2025

The Tertiary Information Service (TIS) is a collaborative initiative involving Victorian Universities, TAFEs, and independent tertiary colleges. Its mission is to support Year 11 and 12 students in preparing for tertiary study and future careers through a travelling roadshow of free events. These events highlight the diverse tertiary education opportunities available across Victoria and Tasmania, including vocational training, certificates, diplomas, and degree programs.

This year, a group of proactive Year 12 students attended the TIS event alongside GSSC teachers and members of our Geared4Careers team. The event served as an invaluable resource, offering a "one-stop shop" for students to explore a wide range of post-school options—all in one place.

TIS complements the university excursions we provide to Year 12 students throughout the year, further enriching their understanding of the pathways available after secondary school.

Australian Defence Force Visit

On Thursday 15th May, two representatives from the ADF were at the school to talk to students about career pathways in the Australian Army, Airforce or Navy. They spent recess in the courtyard answering questions from interested students and then they spent session 3 talking to a selected group for students who had registered for an information session. Students found the presentation highly informative and had plenty of questions about a potential career in the ADF. Students can follow up at the following website or with their Careers Practitioner at school. https://www.adfcareers.gov.au/
