Level 3 and 4 Swimming

Our Level 3 students attended their 5 day intensive swimming program at Aqualink Nunawading from Monday 5th May to Friday 9th May. Our Level 4 students attended their 5 day program from Monday 12th May to Friday 16th May.

The Health and Physical Education Curriculum in the primary school years includes swimming and water safety in an aquatic setting. By the end of primary school, it is anticipated that students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills identified in the Victorian Water Safety Certificate. The Certificate is awarded when a student can swim 50 metres continuously, answer water safety-based questions, and perform simple rescues.

Over the 5 days, qualified swimming instructors worked with our students to build upon their water safety skills. A fabulous time was had by all. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers and staff.

Changes to Mathematics Reporting in 2025

With the VCAA release of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, from 2025, schools are required to report one overarching teacher judgement (Progression Point) in Mathematics. In previous years students would receive a teacher judgement against the three mathematical strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

This year in Mathematics, your child will only receive one teacher judgement against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single aggregated score. As the achievement standards reported on have changed, the first time you receive a report under the Mathematics 2.0 curriculum, it will only show achievement and not progress (one dot only). For all reports after this, progress will be shown against the single achievement standard.

We hope that our new reporting format will be clearer and provide a comprehensive understanding of achievement.  We welcome the opportunity to discuss your child’s report at our Student Led Conferences in the week commencing 30th June 2025.

Building Thinking Classrooms

At Rangeview Primary School, we are so fortunate to have three dedicated Mathematics specialist teachers, Ms Rebecca Gordon, Ms Samantha Carter and Ms Vicki Tzimos. Students attend a Mathematics specialist class once a week using the 'Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics' framework by Dr Peter Liljedahl. Dr Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, a former school teacher, researcher in Mathematics and the author of a number of publications.

Dr Liljedahl, in his extensive research highlighted 14 teaching practices for enhanced learning, using problem solving tasks to promote critical thinking and his strategies encourage self-directed learning.

Students work in visibly random groups and problem solve together on vertical whiteboard surfaces. The safety of being able to 'rub out' an answer, gives students the confidence to take risks, try ideas and think deeply to solve a mathematical problem. Your child may come home and tell you about these fun and engaging lessons.
