This term in Prep D, our inquiry learning has centred on the question: “How do I show respect to my environment?” Students engaged in hands-on science experiments and rich classroom discussions to explore how their everyday actions impact both people and places around them.
They investigated the cause-and-effect relationships between their choices and the natural and built environments. Everyday scenarios—such as leaving glue stick lids off, forgetting to charge iPads, and touching bread with unwashed hands—helped students reflect on how small actions can lead to bigger consequences.
One important routine we explored was handwashing, especially after using the toilet. This simple but essential habit not only supports personal hygiene but also demonstrates respect for others and the environment we share.
A highlight of the term was the Glitter Germ Experiment, designed to simulate how germs spread and to emphasise the importance of using soap when washing hands. As part of the scientific inquiry process, students followed the steps of predict, observe, and explain.
Predict
Before the experiment, students made predictions about what they thought would happen when detergent was added to a bowl of water containing glitter (representing germs). Here are some of their ideas:
Observe
Students then dipped a finger coated in dish soap into the water. They observed that the glitter instantly scattered to the edges of the bowl.
Explain
Through class discussion, students learned that the soap broke the surface tension of the water, causing the glitter to move away. This demonstrated how soap effectively removes germs—much more so than water alone.
We then asked students, “What do you need to do now?”
They reflected on how they could apply this knowledge in their daily routines:
These reflections helped students make meaningful connections between science and everyday habits, reinforcing the importance of hygiene and environmental responsibility.
This term has sparked curiosity, encouraged scientific thinking, and deepened students’ understanding of how to care for their environment. We are incredibly proud of the growth we’ve seen in Prep D—learning to care for their world, one thoughtful action at a time!
