Sip and Paint Fundraiser for Caritas

On Tuesday 1st April, Killester Staff participated in a successful Sip and Paint fundraiser in support of Caritas, as part of the ongoing Project Compassion initiative. The event was themed around the iconic works of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe, bringing together staff members for an afternoon filled with creativity, connection, and compassion.

Guided by talented instructors, attendees were introduced to the distinctive styles of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe. Participants created their own masterpieces, drawing inspiration from Kahlo's vibrant self-portraits and O’Keeffe’s stunning floral poppy. Thanks to the generosity of Killester Staff, we raised a total of $450, which will go directly to Caritas to support their vital work in uplifting and empowering marginalized communities.

Year Eleven Physiotherapy PE Excursion

On the 18th of March, the Year 11 PE class were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on an excursion to PhysiPro in Seaford. By visiting PhysiPro, we gained helpful insight into services offered by physiotherapists and other health professionals to help maintain our physical health. Ben, the co-owner of PhysiPro, talked to us about the pathways to becoming a physiotherapist along with the common injuries that occur. We were also able to look at models of real bones, linking to our current area of study; the musculoskeletal system.

Ben ran a proper warm-up for us before starting the session, emphasising the importance of warming up for injury prevention and maximum performance. We then participated in two fitness tests: the 20-metre sprint and the vertical jump test. These tests were conducted with modern technology for accurate results and there was lots of enthusiasm and encouragement all around.  We also had the opportunity to use the reformer pilates machines, which many of us enjoyed and are eager to do again. Lastly, we tried hydrotherapy, which involved plunging into an ice bath and transitioning into a warm pool. We did this several times and it was definitely challenging but an incredible experience overall!

This excursion taught us about the many facilities offered at PhysiPro and various other physios, including the variety of sports science/allied health careers that we can pursue. Linking to our current topics, we learnt the importance of warm-ups, recovery and ways to prevent injuries before it can become a risk to our health. A special thanks to Ms Sadler for organising this excursion, we had so much fun and gained lots of new insight!

Year Eleven Students Inspired by NGV and Top Designs Exhibition

Year 11 Product Design and Technologies and Visual Communication Design students recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a full day of creativity and inspiration, visiting two of Melbourne’s most iconic cultural institutions — the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and the Melbourne Museum.

At the NGV, students explored a diverse range of exhibitions showcasing sculpture, artwork, and fashion. As they moved through the gallery, they were challenged to closely examine how various artists and designers implemented design elements and principles to enhance key features and convey powerful messages. Using observational drawing techniques, students worked independently to document their insights and develop a deeper understanding of the visual language within each piece.

The creative journey continued at the Melbourne Museum, where students visited the Top Designs Exhibition — a celebration of excellence in student design across Victoria. Here, they engaged with a selection of outstanding Visual Communication Design works and Product Design and Technologies Products, along with the accompanying folios that detailed the design process behind each piece. Students focused on one product and its folio in particular, using it as a source of inspiration for their own ongoing design work.

We hope this enriching experience has sparked new ideas and strengthened students' passion for design. Judging by the excitement and energy throughout the day, the excursion has certainly left a lasting impression
