Shelly De Gabriel, Year 10

Meet Shelly, one of our students in Year 10. Shelly is one of our Wellbeing Ambassadors and a very worthy recipient of some very special awards. She is also a member of the Aboriginal Dance group and she performed at the Schools Spectacular this year.

This year, Shelly was awarded with the KARI All Rounder Initiative Award in November for her outstanding leadership and commitment to sharing her Aboriginal culture with our school community.

Shelly also received two special awards during our recent Presentation Evening: The Year 10 ADF Long Tan Leadership Award and the Aboriginal Culture Leadership Award. These prizes are awarded to students who excel in the areas of leadership. Shelly has also shown her exceptional dedication to her culture and her school community throughout this year.

One of our reporters, Nassem Nabil of Year 10 interviewed Shelly for this article.

Why did you decide to do dance?

I do dance because I enjoy performing different dance styles and showing my family what I have achieved. It's a great opportunity to go to many different places as well.

What motivates you to learn about your culture?

I want to know more about my ancestors and where I come from as well as getting to feel more connected to my culture and the land.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself going to Uni for either music or for childcare.

What leadership roles are you considering doing in the future?

I strive to be a prefect or captain.

What jobs would you like to do in the future?

I have thought about getting a job in childcare, but I also enjoy playing musical instruments.

How did you feel when you got the ADF Long Tan Award, the KARI All Rounder and the Aboriginal Culture Leadership awards?

I felt proud that I was able to achieve getting these awards.

Why do you believe you were chosen for these awards?

I believe that I was chosen for these awards because I’m a respectful student who participates in many school activities.

What school activities do you participate in?

I am in the dance group, and I partake in Aboriginal groups like Souths Cares.

We thank Shelly for answering our questions and look forward to seeing what she achieves next year!
