Holy Cross Happenings
Making Waves at Swimming Lessons
To kick off the 2024 school year our Grade 4, 5 and 6 children made a splash at the Gisborne Aquatic Centre!
Our young swimmers practised essential life-saving skills that included swimming in clothing and rescuing injured swimmers. From mastering basic strokes to learning crucial safety strategies, each day was packed with fun and engaging learning experiences.
Green Thumbs at Work
Green thumbs at work! Our Outdoor Education Program has been in full swing, with children enthusiastically tending to our school garden. From planting an array of vibrant vegetables and fragrant flowers to weeding, the hands-on experience has been both educational and rewarding. Our young gardeners took the time to stake the tomatoes and harvested an abundance of zucchinis. Not forgetting our feathery friends, they dedicated efforts to clean up the chicken coop, creating a cozy haven for our chickens. Children also planted a variety of pollinators, enticing the bees to our garden. Stay tuned for more updates on our Outdoor Education program.
Colour Exploration in Art
Our Art Program has begun a colour exploration in our outdoor spaces. It was nice to begin each lesson outside in the sunshine. The children have been extracting pigments from rocks, bark, and clay, to create a variety of colours. Next the children will prepare their own paints from these organic pigments, and test for durability, adhesion and the intensity of colour.
Year 6 Buddies Foster Support and Smiles with Our Youngest Learners
Our 2024 Year 6 Buddies have embraced their roles as mentors this year. Welcoming their new Prep buddies with warmth and enthusiasm, the Year 6 children have assisted the Preps with a smooth transition into school life. From engaging in playful yard games to starting the day with cheerful greetings, the buddies have begun to foster supportive relationships together. It's wonderful to see the buddy program at Holy Cross continue to create lasting memories for our youngest learners.
A Relaxing and Personal Start to the School Year
At the start of Week One, our assessment days provided an opportunity for children to smoothly transition into the 2024 school year. They could explore their new surroundings in a relaxed setting, sharing their holiday adventures with staff. Additionally, it was a pleasure to greet parents and families as the children arrived for their assessment sessions. Thank you to all Holy Cross families for prioritising their children's participation in the assessment process. Starting the year with up-to-date data has greatly supported our teaching teams in designing tailored learning experiences right from the beginning.
Zoe enjoyed catching up with Zoey during the testing days!
