Year One

2024

Dear Year One Families,

A huge welcome back to Saltwater P-9 College. I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I am thrilled to reintroduce myself as Hayley Mann, your Assistant Principal overseeing the Year One cohort. If you happen to spot me in the yard, please don't hesitate to come over, introduce yourself, and say hello. Building strong relationships within our school community is a priority for me, and I look forward to getting to know every one of you.

As we start the new school year, we are thrilled to share the incredible progress our Year One students have made in their first two weeks. Continue reading to find out what we have been up to.

Reading

In reading, our Year One students have been busy selecting 'just right' books, fostering a love for reading from the very start. The classroom library has been carefully organised, providing a welcoming space for exploration. Students are already practising independent reading, developing valuable skills that will accompany them throughout the rest of their schooling. Moreover, they recently had their first readers theatre lesson, sparking creativity and expression in the world of storytelling.

Writing

The Year One writers have been diving into various writing activities, including crafting personalised 'All About Me' booklets. Handwriting practice is well underway, emphasising the importance of clear and confident expression on paper. Through discussions on what good writers do, our students are laying the foundation for effective communication. Additionally, each child has set up their very own writer's notebook, a special space to nurture their creative ideas.

Mathematics

The Year One students have been learning how to use mathematic materials correctly. Their individual math books have been set up, providing a space to record their mathematical discoveries. They have also started to explore the math proficiencies and engaging in problem-solving strategies.

ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

Our students are not only becoming tech-savvy but are also proficiently engaging with technology, such as logging on to iPads. This exposure to ICT is an integral part of their educational journey, preparing them to enhance their ICT skills throughout the rest of their schooling.

Wellbeing

Our students are actively contributing to their class essential agreement, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. 'Ready to Learn Plans' and the 'Ready to Learn Scale' serve as tools guiding them towards a mindful and purposeful approach to their studies, ensuring their holistic development.

As we embark on the rest of the academic year, I am excited about the learning adventures, friendships, and personal growth that await each child. Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and here's to a fantastic journey ahead!
