Student Support

Mrs Emily Sullivan

Dear Parents/Carers,

It's estimated that 1 in 10 children have undetected hearing loss when they start school. Even if they just have a mild hearing loss and may manage well in a quiet home environment, the school environment may pose extra challenges and a mild loss may impact both their learning and ability to socialise.  Additionally, certain types of hearing loss can develop at any age and come and go (see the information above).

We are fortunate to have access to an app called Sound Scouts which effectively screens children's hearing and provides immediate results. The screening takes about 8 minutes to complete and incorporates three games-based test activities: speech-in-quiet, tone-in-noise and speech-in-noise, all completed on an iPad. In the coming weeks, I will be conducting the screener for all Kindergarten students, recently enrolled students and others as required. Families will receive a consent form via Compass this week.

If you have any concerns about your child's hearing and would like me to carry out the screening test, please make contact via the school office. Further information about Sound Scouts can be found on their website.

Kind regards,

Emily Sullivan
