From Our Year Three & Four Classrooms

History Box Incursion:
In week 7, of term 3 the grade 3/4 classes were lucky enough to have received a visit from History box! Our topic of focus in grade 3/4 in Term 3 was the history of Australia and the first fleet. Throughout the term students learned many interesting topics about the first fleet and how those brought across from Britain were treated. We learned that many people were forced into rationing food, the many diseases that were brought over to Australia and the role of the highwaymen in Australia.
These ideas were all tied up Cynda and Barry from history came and spoke to us about how life was like during the first fleet. They started off by given us a little bit of a role play on governor Phillip where students had to re-enact how governor Phillip would have interacted with those on the ship.
Following this Cynda and Barry modelled to the 3/4s a few activities that would have occurred during the first fleet. The first activity was the students making all spice, which was a common cooking ingredient at the time, and students were given a variety of herbs and spices as well as a mortar and pestle to make their own and bring home to try. Secondly we made love coins, which were tokens that many on the first fleet would make and send back home to show friends and family that they are on their mind. Lastly, students were given pebbles to design and were made to play the first fleet version of "tic tac toe". The students loved these activities!
From the 3/4 team!
