Year 9 Camp Update – Sydney Adventures Begin!

While the flight to Sydney was a little bumpy, all students travelled well and arrived safely.

The learning began right from the airport, as every student checked themselves in and attached their own baggage tags—an early lesson in independence and confidence!

Tuesday was a full day of exploring how people care for others in our cities. Our first stop was Our Big Kitchen, where students rolled up their sleeves to make over 200 meals for people doing it tough. There were no recipes provided—just ingredients, teamwork, and a lot of creativity! It was wonderful to see students take initiative, lead their peers, and show compassion through action.

Next, we visited The Wayside Chapel, where everyone is treated with dignity and equality. Students heard honest and eye-opening stories about homelessness, addiction, and the challenges faced by many in the city. Big questions were raised about topics like safe injecting rooms, covid accommodation and addiction and how best to support those in need. The conversations that followed showed maturity, empathy, and a willingness to listen to different perspectives.

Evenings have been full of laughter, with spotlight, card games, and night games keeping everyone entertained and connected.

Wednesday was public transport day, where students bought their own tickets or Opal cards and navigated Sydney’s busy buses and ferries—including the iconic trip to Manly. The weather has been hot, but spirits are high!

Next we are at an interactive Shakespeare workshop at the Bell Shakespeare Company near Circular Quay, where students dived into the world of Macbeth with enthusiasm and insight.

It’s been the best start to camp—students are engaged, respectful, and soaking up every opportunity to grow in independence, teamwork, and perspective.
