Premier's Reading Challenge

Premier’s Reading Challenge:

On the last day of Term 3, we held a special celebration lunch in the library, for students who completed The Premier’s Reading Challenge. To meet the challenge, students were required to read ten or more books over the course of several months. Upon completion of the challenge, students receive a certificate acknowledging their participation, signed by Premier Jacinta Allen. I am very proud of these students for participating and challenging themselves to read more.

Well done to Allyssa Chan, Alexandra Korol, Tanishka Dash, Jasper Xu, Maggie Troup, Sujay Surendran, Daniel Muirhead, Lily Trezise, James Tresize, Eilidh Lunniss, Lucy Fauvel, Naruki Kato and Summer Patric, for completing the challenge!

The Declaration by Gemma Malley

During the reading challenge, The Declaration, which is written by Gemma Malley, is my favourite book I have ever read. Through the perspective of the protagonist, Anna, the author explores the themes of sacrifice and the value of new life, which really captured my attention. I really like this book and recommend everyone to read it!

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel to The Hunger Games. It’s about Haymitch Abernathy, the same person who later becomes Katniss’s mentor. The story takes place 24 years before her time, during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. It shows how Haymitch survives, wins, and what happens to him afterward.

I really liked this book because it explains a lot about Haymitch and why he acts the way he does in the original series. In a tier list of how much my books make me cry; this certainly came second and left me with a hunger games sized hole in my heart. I’d recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of the dystopian genre or is trying to get into reading, but if not, the film adaptation will come out late 2026 and I virtually beg you to go watch it if possible so you can delve into a little bit of hunger games too.

Overall, Sunrise on the Reaping is now my favourite book of the whole series. It’s exhilarating, sad almost all the time, and gives you a new perspective on the games, characters, and world.
