Wellbeing Story Time

By Ryo Sugihara

Picture story books often open up conversations and learning opportunities for what might be complex and hard-to-tackle concepts for children. This is true for conversations about mental health issues, which can at times feel awkward or be challenging to discuss. In this series, I will be introducing you to picture story books which will not only entertain but introduce children to a range of mental health issues which they or someone they know might experience.

Gone

In life we have our hellos and just as many goodbyes. This story explores the emotional journey one goes through when a loved one dies, and asks the ever thought-provoking question – what happens when you die?

After listening to the story, you could…

  • Discuss your own loss that you have experienced and your emotional journey through grief.
  • Connect the themes in the story to other types of losses such as an end of a friendship, moving home or when you lose a treasure. How did you feel when this happened? How did you cope?
  • If you have lost a loved one, write a letter to them – it could be any kind of message you want them to know.
