PRIMARY (F-6)

School Leader Report - Kara
This week I was lucky enough to join the Year 1 and 2 students on their excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. It was a fabulous day and the children were excellent. The St Anne’s uniform stood out clearly and students wore it with pride, demonstrating our school expectations in a big public setting. All of the adults commented about how impressed they were with their group, and how proud they were of the inquisitive questioning, community mindedness and respect for the location. Well done Year 1 and 2!
Next week is a three-day week. I wish you a restful long weekend, and will see you Wednesday!

Class Reports
Foundation
Over the past fortnight Foundation students have begun exploring their book studies. We have begun our book studies by learning about fairy tales and their features. We have read the Gingerbread Man, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. We created gingerbread men out of clay and decorated them after listening to the story.
This week we looked at fractured fairytales and their features. Fractured fairytales are based off original fairy tales but are changed slightly, often to create a humorous ending.
Our students have picked their favourite fairytale and are creating their own fractured version. They have first planned out a story board, written a draft for their beginning, middle and end, and are now in the publishing stage of creating their story.
Year 1
Melbourne Zoo Excursion
The Year 1 and 2 students had a wonderful day exploring the Melbourne Zoo! It was an exciting opportunity to observe a wide range of animals in their natural habitats and make connections to our current learning about living things and their needs.
Students represented St Anne’s College beautifully, showing our college expectations being safe, respectful, and responsible throughout the day. It was a fantastic day of learning, curiosity, and wonder for all.
A big thank-you to Laurel for her organisation and preparation in ensuring the day ran so smoothly.
Year 2
Over the past fortnight, the Year 2 children have been developing their summarising skills during reading sessions. They have been learning to identify and include key elements in a summary, such as the title, characters, setting (where and when the story takes place), as well as the problem and solution. This is a new skill for the children, and they will continue to practise summarising as part of the InitiaLit Comprehension program in the coming lessons.
In Mathematics, children have been exploring the concepts of grouping and sharing. They have been learning to identify key words in mathematical word problems that indicate whether a situation involves grouping or sharing, helping them apply the most effective strategies to solve problems.
A highlight of the fortnight was the excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. Although it was an early start, the day ran smoothly. We arrived on time at the zoo, and the children were eager to learn and explore. Each class participated in an educational session with a Zoologist Educator, where they deepened their understanding of animal features and habitats. Children then spent time observing a variety of animals and exploring how their physical features support survival in different environments. Throughout the day, St Anne’s children represented the school beautifully by following instructions, acting safely and showing respect and consideration for other zoo visitors.
Back at school, children engaged in a creative follow up activity, using craft materials to show what they had learned about different types of habitats around the world such as the desert, rainforest, ocean, or arctic and how animals have special features or behaviours that help them survive in those environments.
Year 3/4
In Literacy, students have been reading Charlotte’s Web this term and, as we are nearing the end of the book, some students have been redesigning the front cover of this classic children’s novel.
In Connections, students have been learning about the qualities and achievements of some famous explorers. Students have begun creating posters about an explorer of their choice after completing their own research.
In R.E, students have been discussing the qualities of the Good Samaritan and looking at Romans 12:9-13 that teaches us about Christian love and how we can show this towards others.
Year 5
This fortnight we have been focussing on the RRRR topic of Positive Coping.
We have spent time discussing and thinking about the causes and effects of our actions on others - both positive and negative. We watched ‘the kindness vest’ and used it to help us identify what simple actions we can do that helps others.
Together we have made a display of The Invisible Backpack which is a backpack we all carry each day that no one can see and it holds any worries, concerns, problems and emotions that we are feeling. The backpack is a great way to think about how much we don't know about others and how their day might have been before we interact with them.
We added in the ‘rocks’ - the things we add to others backpacks, sometimes without even realising - name calling, ignoring, body language and game choice.
We looked at ways we can help people remove their ‘rocks’ - smile, saying good morning, using kind words, encouraging each other. These are often free and easy to do.
Last RRRR lesson we looked at ourselves and identified the different coping strategies we use when our backpack is getting full. Sometimes these are at home, sometimes at school. Often they are quick and but important to help us regulate ourselves each day.
Year 6
Specialist
Our Year 5 students have been exploring the vibrant world of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. After researching her life and unique polka-dot style, students used Canva to design their own digital posters showcasing key facts and examples of her work. They carefully considered colour, layout, and design elements to communicate Kusama’s bold artistic vision. The printed posters will be displayed as part of their ongoing design project.

Reminders:
Parents/carers are reminded there is a very important process to follow if your student must leave the college at any time throughout school hours. Please ensure you follow these steps:
Parents/carers MUST provide a note to the front office, at the start of the school day, stating the following:
- Student Name
- Date of leave required
- The time the student must present to reception to take their leave
- If they will return to the college the same day, and if so what time they will return
- The reason for the leave being requested
- The parent/carer’s name and signature
Please note, students will only be permitted to be collected by their parent/carer unexpectedly and without a note if it is an emergency.
We remind all that the college opens at 8:30am. This enables educators time to prepare for their day ahead. We appreciate your support in helping our educators be successful. Yard duty staff begin at 8:30am to monitor play spaces before the school day begins at 8:55am.
