Year Four
Spotlight on Learning
Jericho Community
Dear Families & Friends.
As always our week has been very busy with learning. We were all pleased to learn that our beloved chickens are now grown up enough to be enjoying some freedom. They no longer need to be protected as much so have graduated to live with other chickens now on Mrs Dourley's farm.

A reminder to students and parents that Mobile Phones & smart watches must be handed in to the class teacher at the beginning of the day. We are seeing an increasing amount of mobile phones at school, while we appreciate the need for safety, the ICT policy signed at the beginning of the year states that these need to live safely with the teacher during the working school day.
Keep those batteries coming in, we have less than a month left to collect as many batteries as we can.

English:

This week we built on our sentence structure skills to begin writing a paragraph that summarized elements of the Storm Boy story. Next week our vocabulary exploration includes the words sobbed, clutching and flung. We are learning about words with the Latin base of mob-mot-mov-move such as mobile, move, motor, promote, emote, motive, demote and remote. In joined handwriting we are practicing the speed loops with the letter y, in words such as crying, royal, yummy, yellow and young. In writing, our summarizing skills are practiced along with our note taking skills. We are also investigating direct speech in the text.
Mathematics:
This week students focused on division problems using 2 and 3 digit numbers. Next week the students are learning about Mass and Capacity. The vocabulary being used in some lessons are included below. They will be using analogue scales and measuring jugs to explore a range of concepts such as things can be small but heavy, large but light, ordering by capacity rather than size, and how to read both the analogue scales and jugs correctly.

Religious Education:
This week the students prepared and took part in their own devotional journey, undertaking a Refugee Prayer Pilgrimage. Next week the students are learning about poverty within Australia and how we can be pilgrams of hope, how our school can be a pilgrim of hope and how they can continue to live the mission. The students will be introduced to the role of Caritas in our community and how it helps communities in need, and how we can help Caritas.
Social Emotional Learning & Integrated Studies:
This week students talked about the importance of belonging and connection, then we feel confident to be an upstander. Students created a class artwork, We are all different, but we all belong. Across the next few lessons we will talk about ways to seek help or to help others. We will talk about situations where people are distressed because they have been left out, or hurt by others, or worried about something that has gone wrong. We will learn about this because we want to make sure we know how to help our friends or to ask for help if this sort of thing happens.

Auslan:
This week the students learnt to sign a range of pets and what colour they could be. Next week the students expand on their learning, moving to farm animals.
