Year Six

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

 Dear Families,

The 'A' softball team went to Casey Field to play in the division round this week.  We'd like to congratulate them for their tenacity to represent our school further.  Students were seen practicing on the oval each day to hone their skills for Wednesday!   A huge congratulations to the team, they were runners up in the division finals, only losing 16-17 to Devon Meadows.

Unfortunately, the transition day on Wednesday was not able to go ahead due to timetabling issues at St Peters.  We are currently negotiating another day to ensure this transition day goes ahead.  We will let you know the new date once we know.

Congratulations to our award winners for this week; Sadhika, Nihinsa, Florence & Nikka.

OUR LEARNING:

Religious Education Focus:

This week students expanded on their knowledge of Mission Month and its link to the Kingdom of God.  Next, they will be discovering meaningful ways to live out the values of Mission Month, particularly how it connects to Catholic Social Teaching such as Dignity of the Human Person, Common Good and Solidarity. In coming weeks the students will be researching a range of charitable projects that support people in need.  They will focus on issues such as education, access to clean water, poverty, healthcare or human rights.

English Focus:

This week the students explored vocabulary from the text, while also building their skills in persuasive writing. Next week, the students continue to work on many elements of writing including adding appositives (a noun phrase written next to a noun or pronoun to explain or define it) to their writing, creating a body paragraph within their persuasive letter, and researching therapy dogs and wellbeing dogs.

The students will continue to read "Can you see me?", while building fluency skills and analysing short text during focus group time each day.

Mathematics Focus:

Students are studying Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.   This week the students calculated discounts of 50%, 25% and 10% in real life scenarios such as shopping.  Next week, the students are ordering Fractions including tenths, hundredths and thousandths during the number lens element of the lesson.  They are also solving real life fraction and budgeting problems using division, multiplication and percentages amounts.

Integrated Studies Focus:

This term's topic is 'Taking Charge of my health'.  This week the students are learning to explain how media and peers can influence the health choices people make, both positively and negatively.   Next week the students will be learning how to tell if health information is reliable and safe to use.

SEL Focus:

This week the students began to create a "Tree of Connections". This powerful visual emphasises the students connections to family, friends, their school and their community - which includes their faith community.

Auslan Learning Focus:

This week the students focused on animals that live in the sea. They had to reenact their actions in the environment.  Next week the students will be practicing the signs for 'things that fly', for example; fly, kookaburra, butterfly, mosquito, cockatoo and duck.
