Year Five

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

It’s been a good week of great focus and effort in Year 5! Students have been working hard across all subjects while the excitement for camp continues to build. This week, they’ve also been busy writing down their room preferences and getting ready for the adventures ahead.

If you haven't already completed the two Google forms giving permission for the activities and dietary requirements please do so as soon as possible. These documents are essential for your child’s participation in camp.

Next Week

Religious Education Focus: Next week, students will be making connections between the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and how Catholics are called to love and serve one another. Through our inquiry statement, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”, we’ll explore how living out Christ’s mission can inspire us to take action especially as we learn about the Christ Mission India's charitable work in India.

English Focus: We are continuing our class novel, The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, with students exploring new vocabulary and deepening their comprehension by responding to questions that help them summarise each chapter. In Writing, students have been developing persuasive points for their own letters and will begin planning and writing their introductions next week.

Mathematics Focus:

Next week, students will be learning how to use a known percentage to find other related percentage amounts. For example, if they know 10% of a number, they can use that to work out 5%, 20%, or 15%. This helps students develop flexible strategies for solving percentage problems efficiently. Students will also learn to interpret real-world problems involving percentages, applying their understanding to everyday situations.

Integrated Studies Focus:

Next week, students will take part in The Body Investigators incursion, a drama-based incursion that explores how the body’s systems work together to keep us healthy. They will learn about nutritious foods, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and the difference between everyday and sometimes foods.

In class, students will be learning to identify different sources and types of health information, evaluate their reliability, and apply this knowledge to make informed choices about health and wellbeing.

SEL Focus:

Next week, students will be learning about respectful relationships and gender-based violence. They will be focusing on understanding the positive and negative uses of power and learning how to set boundaries in a clear and respectful manner. We continue to create a safe learning environment where everyone deserves to feel safe and respected. Talking about these topics helps students learn how to keep themselves and others safe, both at school and in the wider community.

Auslan Learning Focus:

Students will practise paraphrasing parts of stories in their own way, experimenting with different sign elements and eye gaze. This week’s focus includes learning new signs for animals with wings and using these to understand three different signed stories.
