My Lord and My God
Mission Month (October) is a great time to be reminded of what we are called to do and be in this world. Sometimes we can be left thinking "what is my purpose?", especially when we're busy and we get into a mindless rhythm. This is why the Church has a very intentional calendar of feast days and seasons. When we get to October, we have a theme that begs questions like; "what am I supposed to do with my life?", "what brings true, lasting happiness?", "who is my neighbour?" and lots more.
Catholics use this time to take what Jesus taught us and make it part of our lives. In the prayer that he taught us the 'Our Father' we hear the phrase "thy Kingdom come". We take this to mean that we are to bring about his kingdom...
“When we say ‘thy Kingdom come,’ we’re asking God to make the world the way He wants it to be — full of love, peace, kindness, and fairness...
We’re saying, ‘God, help us make the world a bit more like heaven — starting with me!’”
“It means we want God’s love to be everywhere — in our homes, our school, and our hearts."
“When we share, help our friends, or forgive someone — we’re helping God’s Kingdom come on earth.”
All of our learning communities are focusing on Mission as a way to respond to this call. It would be interesting to ask your child, "what does 'Mission' mean?"
At St Thomas the Apostle, we look forward to Mission Month because there is a lot of rich learning in Catholic Social Teaching: The dignity of every person, helping those who have less, helping people feel welcome and looking after our common home. This is Jesus’ mission.
