Art Show to take guests around the world
Girton Grammar School’s much-loved Art Show will soon be back for another year, with parents, carers, families and the community invited to explore a vibrant array of student artworks sprawled across the Junior School campus on MacKenzie Street.
This year’s event will be the biggest in the School's history, forming part of Arts Fest – a celebration of creativity, culture and community that also encompasses International Day and Grandparents and Special Friends Day in the Junior School.
In honour of the International Day connection, the 2023 Art Show will revolve around the theme of ‘Around the World’.
Previously a Junior School event, this year Girton is thrilled to also include works from its Senior School students – enabling attendees to see a full progression of art created by its youngest pupils right through to those pursuing art subjects as part of their VCE.
In another exciting first, the event will showcase films and other audiovisual pieces by the School’s VCE Media students in the historic Girton House, with its windows blacked out for the occasion.
Girton’s Head of Visual Art, Mrs Nic James – who has now been running the event for 26 years – said there will be hundreds of artworks on display for guests to see.
“Paintings, collage, film, sculpture, ceramics, installations – there is something for all art lovers, all created by our talented students.”
The festivities will comprise the following events:
Opening of the Art Show – 6pm to 7pm, Wednesday 6 September (adult event)
Parents, carers and families are invited to the grand unveiling of the Art Show at the Junior School campus on MacKenzie Street. Following the official opening ceremony at the John E Higgs Hall at 6:10pm, guests will have the opportunity to view other displays around the campus in the d’Helin Building and Girton House. Finger food and beverages will be served in the Hall.
School Tour morning – Thursday 7 September
Prospective students and families visiting Girton Grammar as part of the Tour Morning on Thursday 7 September will be treated to a special tour encompassing the Art Show. School Tour bookings can be made via the Girton Grammar website.
Art Show open day – 9am to 1pm, Saturday 9 September (entry via gold coin donation)
Parents, families and the community are invited to the Junior School campus on MacKenzie Street to explore the trail of student artworks sprawled throughout the John E Higgs Hall, the d’Helin Building and Girton House. There will be plenty of entertainment on the day, with musical performances by the Girton Big Band and VCE Music students, as well as the opportunity for guests to create their own masterpiece at a guided art activity. Attendees will also have a chance to take some art home with them, with a raffle providing the opportunity to win works donated by artist Sarah Gabriel, printmaker Kevin Foley and Mrs James herself, as well as homewares from stores Alex Muir, Pan After and Murphy & Daughters.
