Ensembles 2023

Last week, more than 400 students from Girton Grammar School graced the Ulumbarra stage for two spectacular evenings of musical celebration.

The Senior School opened the gala on Tuesday 15 August, with guests treated to performances from the Girton Big Band, Girton Singers, Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra, as well as guitar, wind and string ensembles.

The Junior School then took to the stage on Wednesday 16 August at a slightly earlier time to ensure guests could make it home to watch the Matildas vie for a place in the World Cup Finals, which sadly wasn’t to be. The audience enjoyed performances from the Junior Concert Band, Poco Strings, Super Strings, Junior Orchestra and Performance Choir. The massed item was a particular highlight, involving every student in Years 3 to 6 singing and playing What A Wonderful World.

Both the Senior and Junior Ensembles concerts were well attended by parents, families, students, staff and the wider community. Their success was a testament to the dedication of Girton’s talented students under the guidance of their passionate music teachers, who provide an enormous source of inspiration. Together, they have worked hard to prepare for the event over the course of this year, and were delighted to have the opportunity to share their skills and love of music with an equally enthusiastic audience.

The Ensembles provided an excellent display of the comprehensive music program offered at Girton, which encompasses classroom music lessons as well as individual vocal or instrumental tuition and ensemble participation. Performing in a music ensemble also provides a valuable opportunity for students to develop their skills while working as part of a team, bringing their instruments and voices together to create a harmonious whole. Principal Dr Emma O’Rielly encapsulated this well in her foreword for the Senior Schools Ensemble program, where she noted that this spirit of collaboration “unlocks a special kind of energy on the stage, just as it does in our School”.

Congratulations to all the students and staff who performed and helped to organise these magnificent concerts. The School would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the members of the Girton community who have enthusiastically supported its music program, including the parents who encourage their children’s musical endeavours on a daily basis.
