Year 5 & 6

Ms Hall, Ms Riolo, Ms Armstrong and Ms Hicks

Hello 5/6  Families!

Can you all believe that we are over halfway through Term 3 already? We are so proud of all the students' hard work and dedication both in class and while representing our school during extra-curricular activities. The remainder of the term is going to be action packed, with our biggest highlight being our 5/6 Urban Camp.

Dates to Remember

  • Urban Camp final payment due 23rd August
  • Urban Camp 11th - 13th of September

Camp

We are only a few short weeks away from packing our bags and setting off on our Urban Camp. For three days and two nights, we will be hitting the streets of Melbourne’s CBD, exploring the best of what our city has to offer. Further information, including packing lists, will be sent home shortly.

Reminder: Any medication your child needs, or may need, for the duration of camp must be handed to Mrs Chew on the morning of camp. This includes the use of Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, on an ‘as needed’ basis. The medication must be clearly labelled, within date and listed on the orange medication form.

Literacy

In Literacy we have embraced the students creativity by asking them to create three forms of poetry. The unit started with shape poetry, where students were challenged to incorporate similes, metaphors and personification in their pieces. They then moved on to drafting limericks and ballads. In Reading, we have engaged with texts linked to our Geography unit. Each class has chosen a class novel to read daily. While listening, students have been asked to listen for synonyms, antonyms and words containing apostrophes.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we have continued with our fractions unit through our Explicit Direct Instruction lessons. We have moved on from representing, modelling and ordering fractions on a numberline, to adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, as well as simplifying them. Building on our knowledge of 12 and 24 hour time, we have learnt to convert between the time representations and the reasons for using 24 hour time. We’ve also explicitly looked at elapsed time, with a real life focus on reading timetables.

Geography

In our Geography unit we continued to build on our knowledge of maps and their features. Students have learnt about scale on a map, why we need them and how to use them to calculate distances. In recent weeks we have learnt about latitude and longitude and how we can use them to locate places on a map. Did you know that the latitude and longitude coordinates for Gilgai Plains Primary School are (-37 , 144)?

We look forward to a zesty, kind and respectful month ahead!
