Year 3 August Newsletter

Hello Year Three Families,

The first half of Term 3 has been full of learning! We have been working hard on improving some skills we already have as well as developing our knowledge of brand new ones. Keep reading to find out more.

Literacy

In Comprehension & Literature, we have been learning about a new text type which is called a review. A review is where we provide a summary about a text, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses, recommend and give the text a rating. We have reviewed fiction, non-fiction and digital texts. We have used our summarising skills to record the main details of the text and discussed which parts of the text we liked and disliked and gave reasons for them. We learnt a new skill where we had to compare the text to other texts with similar genres, ideas or authors to identify which audiences would enjoy reading the book.

For Creating Texts, we have been continuing to deepen our understanding of sentence structure. We learnt about dependent and independent clauses and how they must work together in sentences and practised using the subordinating conjunctions; although, even though and when in a range of sentences. We have also been using images to help us write topic sentences and writing supporting details from topic sentences we have created. We are now working on converting single paragraph outlines (a clear plan for a paragraph) into draft paragraphs.

Numeracy

For Number and Algebra, we have finished off our unit on Money by calculating change to the nearest five cents. We are now starting to learn how to model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole.

In Measurement and Geometry, we have extended our knowledge of length by calculating both perimeter and area. Students were able to apply addition to calculate perimeter and counting or multiplication to calculate area. We have also been learning to measure mass using grams and kilograms and capacity using millilitres and litres. The students enjoyed estimating and weighing various objects using scales as well as estimating and weighing the capacity of different containers. We challenged the students to convert between grams and kilograms and millilitres and litres too!

Geography

Through our Geography unit students have been learning about the different states and territories within Australia. We have been locating each capital city and identifying the man made and natural features. We are now researching and locating on a map the major rivers, deserts and rainforests of Australia.
