Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on

UNIVERSITY OPEN DAY VISIT

Well done to Year 11 student, Indilly Penny, who travelled to Canberra with her family to the Australian Defence Force Open Day at the University of NSW. This was a great opportunity for Indilly to ask questions and to find out more about applying to train as Mission Control Officer.

WHAT'S ON AT SCHOOL

Our staff were delightfully surprised with a very tasty spread for morning tea, prepared by the Life Skills class. The students focused on safe food handling and hygiene as well as how to present food in an attractive way. Thanks to Mrs Taig for shopping and organising with the students.

Mrs Rook's VCE Year 11 Business Management class got to do a fun task where they blind tasted and discussed the differences between brand and generic food products. Students gave a rating to different aspects of the products, before revealing which was the brand vs the generic. Some preferences were surprising! The class then discussed the different elements of packaging that influence consumers perception, such as colour theory, branding and labelling.

WELCOME SPRING!!

our staff celebrated the first day of spring with an abundance of fresh flowers and morning tea delights! We welcome the sunshine and blue skies.

BLACK RANGES BASKETBALL

On Wednesday 6th September, the year 8 boys basketball team headed to Ararat for the Black Ranges competition. We had two teams of students representing St Brigid’s College.

The A Team won two of their games and narrowly lost their other two games. The B Team had a wonderful day and played well together as a team, coming away with a draw against Ararat College and losses in their other three games.

Thank you to Mr. Dunn for coaching and Year 9 student, Lewis, for being our official, not only for our games but also for other teams on the day. Our students had a wonderful day out representing our school.

On Thursday 7th September, our Year 8 girls basketball team competed at the Black Ranges tournament at the Horsham Basketball Stadium. The team played three great games and had a very successful day, defeating Murtoa College 97-11 and Ararat College 42-1. They then played in the final against Horsham College, winning 40-10. Well done!

The girls will now compete at the Greater Western Region tournament in October.

NETBALL VICTORIA STATE FINALS

Congratulations to the team of Year 7 and 8 students, along with two students from SMJ Horsham, Ruby and Shea, who played in the Netball Victoria Schools Championship on last Tuesday in Melbourne. After a very early start, the students played exceptionally well coming away with two wins, a draw and three narrow loses.

It is exciting for our school to be able to develop netball squads and compete at these elite levels.

We are excited to offer our students the chance to participate in the National All School Netball Challenge in 2024.

JUNIOR NETBALL - STATE FINALS

It was with much excitement that we packed up the bus and headed off to Melbourne for the State Boys Junior Netball titles. It was only when we were on the outskirts of Melbourne, did one of the students ask Brydie where the balls are! With some quick planning and phone calls we had a set of balls and bibs ready for collection the following morning.

Our first game started off shaky and we out-scored the opposition in the second half, narrowly missing the win. Our second game ended in a draw, and we lost our third and final game to one of the finalist on the day. All our students played exceptionally well and had a fantastic time away.

Thank you to Mr. Sostheim for coming away and assisting with the students.

YOUNG VINNIES | Food Donation Drive

Our Young Vinnies team had the pleasure of meeting Pat and Beverly from the Horsham St. Vinnie's Conference. They shared how our school can support them through various initiatives, including fundraisers, sponsorships, and the Winter Sleepout.

Thank you to the generosity of our students, staff, and families, we were able to present them with abundant food and toiletry donations collected in recent weeks. St. Vinnies will ensure these items reach those in our community who need them most.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed. Your kindness makes a difference!

STAWELL GOLD MINES

Earlier in Term 3, as part of the Pathways to the Future program, our Year 10 students participated in an excursion to the Stawell Gold Mines. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the career pathways that currently exist in mining. Thank you to Stawell Gold Mines for hosting our students!

GREATER WESTERN VOLLEYBALL

On Tuesday 12th, our Year 7 boys competed at the Greater Western Region volleyball tournament held at St Brigid's. The boys had a successful day, defeating Daylesford College in an exciting match. The team will now compete at state level in Term 4. Well done!

WHAT'S ON AT SCHOOL

This term, Year 8 Maths students have been focusing on chance and probability.

Their term project involved students designing and building a carnival-style game.

Before the carnival day, the students had to calculate the theoretical probability of each of the outcomes of their game. On the day of the carnival, the students played each other's games, won prizes and gathered data in order to calculate the experimental probabilities of their games. Great fun!

GRAMPIANS HEALTH HANDS ON NURSING

Yesterday, several Year 9-11 students participated in the Grampians Health ‘Hands on Nursing‘ program. The students were given an insight into the range of careers and career pathways that are available within health/nursing. Students rotated through three different hands on activities:

1. Basic life support/Hospital tour.

2. No lift handling of patients.

3. Emergency medicine- Taking and recording vital signs.

The program was a great opportunity for the students to find out more and to ask questions. Well done to the students who participated and thank you to the staff from Grampians Health and the WSM LLEN for making this program available to our students.
