Book Week:  "WAY TOO COOL" Performance

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, the teachers and children enjoyed the magnificent team from Perform Education to watch Craig Christie's 2023 Book Week performance "Way too Cool".  Craig Christie has linked the Book Week theme of "READ, GROW, INSPIRE", to encourage everyone to care for and respect each other through friendship.

We watched how Henry and Marley, who had  been friends since they met at kindergarten, go through changes in their friendship. We watched them take different paths in their own adventures, as Henry started to think he was WAY TOO COOL to hang out with Marley. That was until he realised what a mistake he had made.

Throughout their journey we saw them as strong friends, then drift apart, then come back together again with a stronger and more supportive friendship.

Costume Parade

Wednesday:

On Wednesday we were all so very excited, our costume parade was a major highlight of the week. All staff, students, and siblings dressed up for our big parade. We even had some Kinder kids dress up as jigsaw puzzle pieces and come along for this very special event.

Children voted on their favourite costumes once back in their classrooms and winners were  announced at the end of day on Wednesday.

Congratulations to all the winners of the costume awards.

House Activities - Read Arounds and Book Voting

Thursday:

On Thursday afternoon all children join in House group activities and shared reading books. They engaged with puzzles and quizzes. There might have also been 1 or 2 students who  beat me in the Word Search Challenge.

Also congratulations to those 3 grade 5/6 children (Olivia, Grace and Mila) who were the first 3 to return their word search challenges to me this week. I hope you enjoyed your prize treats!

 Friday:

On Friday we celebrated the HNPE best book as decided by the children. The children voted as follows:

Picture Book:

Frank's Red Hat (by Sean E Avery)

Early Childhood:

Jigsaw: A Puzzle in the Post (by Bob Graham)

Younger Readers:

The Way of Dog (by Zana Fraillon & Sean Buckingham)

New Illustrator:

There's No Such Book (by Jake A. Minton & Jessica Dettmann)

Eve Pownall: (for Non-fiction books)

DEEP: Delve into Hidden Worlds (by Jess McGeachin)

On Friday during lunch eating time, Mrs Galea read Jigsaw: A Puzzle in the Post, by Bob Graham, to the whole school via a zoom link. Wow! What a treat.

At this point, I would like to say a special thank you to all the staff, especially those who volunteered their time to be a part of the Book Week Committee.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who helped students dress up in such imaginative and supportive ways. Thank you to the students for your enthusiasm in coming along in your amazing costumes to be a part of the parade, but also for all who participated during the week's activities.

This year's theme of "READ, GROW, INSPIRE", signifies all the wonderful experiences and delicious language books bring to us, to help us do exactly that, read, grow, inspire and be inspired. This year's celebration of all things books certainly inspired me and from what many children are still saying, it inspired them too!

If you haven't had a chance just yet, please do check out the shortlisted books, and the winners for this year via this link https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023.

Fun with Literacy @Home

Everyone loves a birthday party!

This fortnight we are encouraging you to explore books that are having a birthday this year, or those that have recently had a birthday.

You might like to design and plan a birthday celebration for one of these, or one of your own books.

Here is another birthday book that I am sure you will know very well. This is one for the older children - middle grade/young adult fiction series. This book is the 5th book in the amazing Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.

Super Literacy Challenge

I have some very nice little prizes that I am giving to the first 3 children each fortnight, who come to me with their responses to these "Super Literacy Challenges". But you have to be one of the first 3 to show me your responses...and you have to be correct of course!

Are you going to give it a go? You will also have your name published in the newsletter as a "Super Literacy Winner"

Super Literacy Challenge Number 3

Words from Words

This fortnight's word is "reading"

R E A D I N G

Your challenge is to make as many smaller words as you can from this one word.

  • You can only use each letter once in each word.
  • You can mix and match the letters to make your words.

HINT: There are 50 words you can make!

...well, actually there are really 154 words that can be made, but I will settle for 50.

Good Luck - don't forget to see me first to claim your place and to have your name recorded in the newsletter as a Super Literacy Winner and collect your prize.
