Visual Art Update

This week in Visual Art we've been exploring a very important concept in education; Student Voice.

Grades three to six students discussed what Student Voice is and how powerful it is in helping students to really engage deeply in learning experiences. Our students have a huge amount of choice in the Art space each lesson; to choose what materials they will use, where they will work, if they will collaborate or work alone, wether they will experiment or launch into a final piece. We discussed how Student Voice is even more than this ability to choose your own direction. It is also about students directing the future lesson planning that teachers undertake.

We were introduced to the new Art room “Student Voice Choice Poster” where students were invited to use a sticky note to write down anything they thought they might like to work on in Art in the future.

Each week, Mrs. Tulloch will take down the sticky notes from the poster and do her best to incorporate as many of the reasonably achievable suggestions as possible, into the Art room lesson plans.

As they haven’t yet learned about lots of the available materials and experiences in Art, Prep to Two students did the same thing by just brain storming all of the things they loved about Art….. Not surprisingly, we had “FREE DRAWING” suggested about ten times from the Preppies.

As well as our wonderful Student Voice discussions we started to think about the fantastic tradition of Book Week, happening next week. Prep students shared the big book version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and then created a collage hat of the caterpillar to use at Book Week, if another costume hasn’t been organised. It was literally thrilling to see the fast and accurate scissor work and how easily they were all able to handle multiple instructions to successfully complete their adorable little hats. Our tiny new Preppies from term one have grown so much!

Next week, we really look forward to sharing photos of all the fantastic activities our Student Voice suggestions have produced AND we cannot wait for Book Week too. Book Week is like Christmas for teachers!!!!
