Year 5/6 Victorian Coding Challenge
This term, eight of our Year 5/6 students were selected to participate in The Victorian Coding Challenge which is run by The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV). The students are:
Maia, Reid, Charlie, Tom, Isaac, Raphael, Louis, Jock
The Victorian Coding is a 2-stage challenge that supports students in refining their coding skills through mathematics which has been a great opportunity for Elsternwick Primary School to participate.
Stage 1 – Coding Challenge
In stage 1, our selected Year 5/6 students engaged in mathematical coding tasks through ‘Scratch.’ The challenges required them to apply coding and algorithmic thinking to solve problems.
The students were supported by our tutor teacher Ms Kalliopi Tsavaris and our Learning Specialist Mathematics Teacher, Mr Will Saunders to complete the challenges.
Stage 2 – Students to compete in a state-wide coding competition
In Stage 2, our eight selected Year 5/6 students, will be accompanied by Mr Will Saunders to compete with other schools in a state-wide mathematical coding competition on Tuesday 31st October. We wish them all the best with the competition.
Students’ Feedback for Stage 1
The MAV Victorian Coding Challenge was fun, and it inspired us to be creative and play around to code new things. All the tasks were well explained and designed to make it really clear and satisfying if we completed them. If we got stuck, we would always have the teacher or other students to help us out, and there were lots of useful hints on the website. Overall, it was an incredible experience.

The MAV Victorian Coding Challenge was very entertaining and enjoyable. It motivated me to be creative and think outside the box. All the tasks were easy to understand and had an extension for students who wanted to challenge themselves. I would highly recommend the challenge to anybody who likes coding and math.

The mathematics coding challenge has been fun. It’s been really challenging, and it pushed my limits, but it’s also been inspiring. I learnt that variables are essential when coding and you can’t make a code without them.
By Reid J (Year 5)
The MAV coding challenge was a way to cultivate and introduce me to coding. It was a challenge that I took on and a way to motivate myself and be inspired. I learnt how to use mathematics when coding.
By Maia B (Year 5)
I loved the challenge presented by this event and the experience. Working with my friends was an added help. I learnt that variables are very important when coding as they hold numbers.
By Tom B (Year 5)
I have learnt to persist even when it gets challenging and to always try my best. I learnt what variables are and how to use them in coding.
