Head Lice

Head Lice

Head lice have been around for many thousands of years. Anyone can get head lice. Head lice are small, wingless, blood-sucking insects. Their colour varies from whitish-brown to reddish-brown. Head lice only survive on humans. If isolated from the head they die very quickly (usually within 24 hours). People get head lice from direct hair-to-hair contact with another person who has head lice. Head lice do not have wings or jumping legs so they cannot fly or jump from head to head. They can only crawl.

At school please ensure:

  • Children with shoulder-length hair or longer must attend school with their hair tied up.
  • All students (long or short hair) should have their hair tied neatly off the face during school. Having hair tied of the face.
  • Child/children cannot attend school with untreated head lice.
  • If lice or eggs are found treatment of hair must be done at least twice - first time on the day that lice or eggs are found & again 7 days post the first treatment.
  • If eggs are not completely removed from the child's hair this will start the 28 cycle of lice living again.
  • Parents/carers will notify the school if their child/ren is found to have live lice and advise when treatment has commenced.
