er's ReBook Week Celebration

The Jiloa Centre was the centre of colour, creativity and costumes on Friday last week for the annual DCS Book Week Parade. Students from Kinder through to Year 6 and all Primary staff brought book characters to life with their amazing costumes. It was encouraging to see so many in our community get into the spirit of the morning and enjoy the fun that events like this bring.

Here are some of the student reflections from the Book Parade:

Edith R - I enjoyed going on stage and having everyone excited.

Charlotte B - I loved coming to school as Mary Poppins and flying away.

Lexie R - I loved coming as Bluey and wagging my tail.

Eddie C - My favourite part was getting up on stage and wearing my Dad's motorbike helmet.

Tarlie S - My favourite part was seeing everyone dressed up as their favourite book character.

Ella Y - I enjoyed seeing the different creative costumes.

Hudson L - It was amazing to see all the other costumes and the hard work that others put in.

Misha D - It was wonderful to see everyone having a great time and dressing up with my friends.

Sanudi B - I really liked my costume that had a white gown with butterflies, fairy wand and bouquet of flowers.

Year 5/6 Excursion

At 8:30am on Wednesday 23 August, the Year 5/6 classes left school and headed for Launceston. After a one-hour drive they arrived and they were pumped!

Their first destination was Penny Royal. In their separate class groups they explored three fun activities: The Dark Ride, Gold Panning and the Sarah Island Ghost Tour. The 5/6’s had a lot of fun. The dark ride was indeed dark (at the beginning at least) but venturing into the past was an absolute thrill. Gold panning wasn’t just for finding gold flecks, it included a hunt for precious gems, stones and so much more. The Sarah Island Ghost tour involved traveling on a boat guided by a sailor from the past. Students were taken into a lower area where they followed the patrol of a British soldier and had a frightening jump-scare experience.

After having a great time at Penny Royal, and a mostly enjoyable lunch break at the Riverbend Park, the group went on to the Inveresk Museum. The lunch was characterised by teachers climbing up and sliding down the expansive climbing rope structure.

The Inveresk Museum had various exhibits, the first being the Australian animal exhibit. Student Ezra Alexander said his favourite part of this exhibit was the giant plane hanging from the roof. There was also a space exhibit, photo exhibit and an outdoor playground area where the various characteristics of sound could be explored.

Their last activity was a showing at the planetarium of the movie “3-2-1 Lift Off.” Max said he didn’t enjoy the movie that much, but luckily most other students found it entertaining!

All in all, it was a wonderful day of fun, exploration and learning.
